LETTER: Merging services could increase efficiency

IN response to your comment column this week, I understand that, thanks largely to the fire service’s advice on fire prevention and improved construction methods, serious fires have significantly reduced in recent years.

So rightly the fire service duties have expanded such that they support and overlap with the ambulance service (among others).

That service by comparison often appears seriously over-stretched.

Would not a merger of the two services as they have in France both increase efficiency and save money – or can that not be a local decision?
