LETTER: Need round table solution

You can't please everybody all of the time but running a consultation as Highways England has done has led to alienation and division.

We now need to find a solution ourselves which more of us can agree on and coalesce round. What we need is a round table.

The solution won’t be found unless we invite everyone on an equal footing to the table to discuss openly and transparently.

We now need a fresh start. I suggest a seminar such as was organised for the Manhood 20 odd years ago.

‘Go Dutch’ brought together experts for a week-long workshop which gave rise to a Peninsula-wide plan that included the Medmerry Relief Scheme.

The A27 needs a similar workshop with input from people with different interests and expertise. Open to all.

Not even a hint of a hidden agenda or secret dealings. Resulting in a community-led plan we can confidently take to the Department for Transport.

A week-long workshop – in an empty city-centre shop – with input from people with different interests and expertise. Open to all.

An acknowledgement that no one wants a new road in their back yard. And respect for the other’s backyard would be good start, too.

A fresh slate. We need leaders who can listen, negotiate, and find creative solutions rather than just being wedded to building roads to boost economic growth.

Less people took part in the A27 consultation despite the 55,000 letters being sent out than the one for safer streets run for the 20mph Consultation in 2012.

You have to win hearts and minds first and bring people with you.

We need an ‘integrated’ approach to cover all road users .

“A developed country is not a place where the poor have cars, it’s one where the rich use public transport.”
