TWO sisters from East Wittering are holding a charity buffet on Saturday as part of a huge village fundraising effort to help children in a West African country get secondary school education.
Joanna Jeffers and Amanda Pratt are holding the event to raise money for a play area for a new school in the village of Bo in Sierra Leone.

It is part of a project adopted by residents in West Wittering who have raised £35,000 in 18 months to pay for the school building.

Legendary Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, who has a home in the area, already has donated musical instruments to the school.

His family will be among those visiting Bo once the school is completed at the end of May.

"My sister and I have children and know we are very lucky here and have lots of different opportunities," said Mrs Jeffers, of Culimore Road.

"We're doing whatever we can to help. We know we can cook and get friends to help out and take part.

"Around 100 pupils in Bo are being taught in a church and there are 500 in total who have nowhere to go after leaving primary school. The conditions aren't ideal."

Mrs Pratt is a qualified chef and will be preparing the food with her sister for Saturday's buffet.

Live band Three Minute Miracle will be playing Amy Winehouse and Eurythmics covers. There will also be an auction.

Mrs Pratt, of The Crescent, said: "It would be hard for us to go out to Sierra Leone because we both have young families, but we just wanted to raise money for the school in a fun way."

The school has been temporarily operating under the church in the Mothers' Union canteen.

Headmaster Soloman Scott Manga and his colleagues have been working for 18 months voluntarily.

Once the school has been registered the state will pay their wages.

The Rev Bruce Holben, of St Peter and St Paul's Church in West Wittering, has been a key figure in promoting the project.

"These are some of the neediest children in the world. Most have lost parents in the war," said Mr Holben, who is also a member of the Bo fundraising committee.

"Education over there costs about £60 a year and most parents cannot afford it. We are trying to develop a scholarship so people can sponsor the pupils to put a child through school."

Some residents from Birdham and Itchenor have also contributed to the money raised for the school.

The buffet takes place at West Wittering Cricket Club at 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £12 each and are available by calling Mrs Jeffers on 01243 673561.
