CHILDREN at Buckingham Park Primary School, Shoreham, got a taste of what it was like to grow up during the war when they were visited by World War Two veterans.

Year-six pupils were visited by eight veterans, who shared their experiences of evacuation, black-outs and the Blitz.

Sue Greed, a member of the support staff at Buckingham Park Primary, said: "It was absolutely wonderful.

"The veterans said they really enjoyed themselves and they didn't want it to end, so we went on longer than expected.

"They have so many stories to tell – one woman came from Argentina and her boat was hit by a torpedo."

The visit by the veterans was part of the children's autumn term topic of World War Two.

Year-six teacher Carina Leggett said: "It was lovely – the children are learning a lot.

"They are very interested and very enthusiastic and have been asking lots of questions.

"They've been asking all about rationing and air-raid shelters."
