Bowls: Mixed week for Witterings

A mixed set of results for Witterings leads this week's bowls round-up, but there's also action from Middleton, Chichester, Crablands, Pagham, Bognor, Middleton, Southbourne, Midhurst and Stedham.

WITTERINGS

Arundel 75 Witterings 75

Witterings drew in the Littlehampton Gazette Bowls League at Arundel, both clubs gaining five points.

Scores: S Hooker, L Bangs, E Shoyer, J Simmonds (s) won 20-17, B Curtis, T Mulligan, F Knotts, D Bell (s) won 27-11 (top rink), M Grabowski, M Cavell, R Stephens, B Horsley (s) lost 22-12, B Cruickshank, L Andrew, M Edwards, J Slogrove (s) lost 25-16.

Fishbourne 43 Witterings 51

Witterings played a three triples mixed friendly and won on two rinks, only just losing the third by one shot.

Scores: S Hooker, L Bangs, M Corbett (s) won 17-10 (top rink), M Thresher, P Hutton, B Horsley (s) won 16-14, A Somerville, J Mulligan, L Andrew (s) lost 19-18.

Witterings 33 Chichester 35

Witterings ladies played a friendly three-rink game against Chichester on a very wet and windy afternoon. Both captains decided at ten ends the game should end because of rain.

Scores: J Edwards, R Hanbury, M Aylward, B Newman (s) won 14-10, M Cruickshank, A Andrew, M Mulligan, C Horsley (s) lost 10-6, V Hooker, J Mulligan, C Tuffin, P Lillywhite (s) lost 15-13.

East Preston 39 Witterings 46

Witterings ladies played away to East Preston ladies in the C&M League and won on both rinks, gaining the full six points.

Scores: J Edwards, Julie Mulligan, M Aylward, B Newman (s) won 22-20, A Andrew, M Mulligan, C Tuffin, P Lillywhite (s) won 24-19.

Witterings 82 Sussex Royal British Legion 89

Witterings played at home to Sussex Royal British Legion in a five-rink mixed friendly. They won on three rinks, drew on one and lost on one but still lost by seven shots.

Witterings 81 Sussex Vice Presidents 109

Witterings played at home in a friendly against the county
vice-presidents' team and had an enjoyable afternoon of bowling between the showers.

Witterings 94 Chichester 112

Witterings men played at home in a friendly triples match against Chichester and won on only two rinks.

Score: P Chiever, S Hooker, E Shoyer (s) lost 26-11, M White, M Edwards, D Bell (s) lost 23-11, A Gibbs, L Andrew, J Slogrove (s) won 20-13, L Cross, L Bangs, B Horsley (s) lost 24-17, M Trusler, B Cruickshank, R Stephens (s) lost 17-12, M Thresher, F Knotts, D Leach (s) won 23-9 (top rink).

Little Spain v Witterings

Witterings visited Little Spain in a friendly six-rink triples match but the weather was so bad, the game was stopped after nine ends.

CHICHESTER

Congratulations go to Chichester Priory Park ladies: Daphne Anderson, Bridget Collins, Wendy Adams and skip April Janman reached the National Fours Championship final at Royal Leamington Spa. Having put out five other counties throughout the week, they eventually went out in the final to Huntingdonshire on a rain soaked day.

Betty Spicer has reached the county semi-finals in Champion of Champions.

Leigh Park 82 Chichester 86

Chichester travelled into Hampshire for a mixed friendly match and after nine ends they trailed by six shots. But they fought back over the second half of the game to give Chichester a narrow four-shot victory.

Scores: Mrs M Maggs, A Daines, V Mitchell drew 18-18; Mrs I Taylor, D Mason, M Lewis lost 27-8; L Stewart, B Money, P Howick won 29-5; R Smith, D Gray, C Wade lost 18-8; Mrs J Jones, R Percival, L Shipp won 23-14.

CRABLANDS

Crablands 151 Maltravers 86

Crablands won on all six rinks when they hosted Maltravers.

The ladies picked up six points in the league and the top rink was skipped by Derek Adams.

Scores: V Tyrrell, L Tuck, J Byrne, C Bowles won 23-17, P Jones, J Lindley, J Rawlins, M Brown won 27-10, D Jones, D Eggleton, C Pestle, D Adams won 29-7, D Martin, C Garland, E Potz, R Eastland won 26-24; D Jonas, L Dray, A Humphreys, J Saunders won 27-23, B Whittle, A Gilling,
J Tyrrell, A Blyth won 19-5.

Crablands went to Aldingbourne for a six-rink match, but the game was cancelled because the green was flooded.

Members enjoyed their mixed triples competition, playing through to the finalists, who will meet each other on finals day. They are G Humphreys, Rod Shambrook and E Clifton, who will play V Tyrrell, D Jones, A Blyth.

PAGHAM

The club's ladies played a two-rink friendly at Bognor and won 36-35.

Scores: Doreen Ellis, Marlene Steel, Mary Donaldson, Annie Ross lost 20-12, Sylvia Pugh, Betty Williams, Joan Wells, Sheila Stocker won 24-15.

Two mixed triples played a BM League game versus Norfolk, but Pagham lost on both rinks for a 45-27 reverse.

Scores: Diana Mitchell, Eric Mitchell, Paul Mayoss lost 23-11, Robert Pearson, Chris Mayoss, Mike English lost 22-16.

A three-rink men's friendly saw Pagham lose 69-36 at Norfolk.

Scores: Peter Langridge, Barry Baines, Tony Wells, Peter Quilter lost 19-12, Gordon Williams, Peter Heaver, Eddie Pearce, Dave Spink lost 33-9, Brian Farr, Mick Adams, John Burke, Douglas Vaughan lost 17-13.

A four-rink men's league game at East Preston ended in a 123-49 win for Pagham, who took ten points.

Scores: Peter Langridge, Mick Adams, Peter Quilter, Peter Brooker won 25-11, Brian Sales, John Warner, Mervyn Melvey, Roy Livermore won 37-13, Daniel Lovell, Roy Hart, Tony Wells, Paul Mayoss won 30-15, Robert Pearson, John Stocker, Dave Spink, Mike English won 31-11.

BOGNOR

Bognor Regis 91 East Preston 63

Bognor consolidated the lead of their league with a powerful win against East Preston collecting maximum points in a convincing win.

Scores: D Jackson, T Rexstrew, B Hey, R Garder won 28-17; T Mussell, J Keywood, R Friday, T Gaskin won 16-15; N Waddock, A Hall, G Stevens, P Lillford won 22-16; R Lincoln, S Soames, J Christensen, A Richardson won 25-15.

Telepost 54 Bognor Regis 107

Bognor had no trouble in beating local club Telepost, but in the early stages play was quite even but Bognor soon moved into top gear and finished with a convincing victory.

Scores: P Friday, N Burchfell, P Phillips won 28-12; B Readon, J Keywood, N Waddock won 25-4; R Lincoln, P Jones, R Friday won 18-13;
T Moore, A Harrison, R Gardener won 20-12; C Dale, J Shaw, D Parker won 16-13.

Bognor Regis 40 RAFA 36

Against their near neighbours RAFA club in an interesting two rink contest Bognor proved just that little bit better on the Jack and came away with a narrow four point victory 40-36 in the end.

Scores: B Harvey, J Taylor, N Burchfell, A Hall won 29-13; C Dale, J Shaw, B Doncaster, R Walton lost 11-23.

MIDDLETON

A mixed triples match away to Grasshoppers ended in a 77-75 win restored the club's winning ways.

Scores: June Bagley, J Bagley, Rosemary Gregory 10-21; K Jenkins, K Baker, Irene Smith 8-23; D Jenkins, D Cross, G Smith 12-15; H Hollingsworth, Pam Hollingsworth, R Wootten 25-7; C Pratt, V Garhard, Mary Wootten 22-9.

At home to Maltravers, in the Littlehampton Gazette League, Middleton won 117-52 to take eight points.

Scores: C Pratt, H Hollingsworth, J Beaven, M Feneley 26-11; S Jackson, D Cross, J Tripp, K Taylor 19-21; K Jenkins, V Gerhard, K Baker, G Smith 28-12; G Addison, D Gower, J Graham, J Wilson 44-8.

After a long run of successes, it was down to earth with a bang against old friends Little Spain at home. The visitors were 116-73 winners.

Against Norfolk, at home, Middleton suffered a 71-50 defeat.

Scores: J Bagley, S Jackson, G Smith won 15-11; G Addicott, K Baker, J Graham lost 20-9; H Hollingsworth, K Jenkins, J Wilson lost 15-12;
J Tripp, N Robertson, D Cross lost 25-14. Ladies: June Bagley, Pam Hollingsworth, Irene Smith lost 20-10.

In a Brooks Motors League match against Southbourne, Middleton secured a 32-30 victory.

Scores: K Jenkins, Ann Steventon, M Feneley 10-18; Rosemary Gregory, J Beaven, G Smith 22-12. Middleton 4pts, Southbourne 2pts.

In a friendly with Southbourne, it finished 49-12 to Middleton.

Scores: H Hollingsworth, Pam Hollingsworth, V Garhard 25-5; D Jenkins, B Bravington, J Bagley 24-7.

SOUTHBOURNE

Purbrook 87 Southbourne 68

Southbourne managed to win on only two of the five triples played in a mixed match at Purbrook in the Reflex League.

Scores: L Williams, J Staker, D House won 17-15; D Young, J A Lillywhite, M Odell lost 17-11; J Jennings, P Garrard, M Baylis won 14-12; I Jennings, J C Lillywhite, C Young lost 25-16; A Williams, A Greenfield, D Alner lost 20-10.

MIDHURST

Midhurst welcomed Liphook and Petersfield to their green in June Lane for the Midhurst cup final.

The teams bravely battled in continuous rain and Petersfield won with a score of 76 to Liphook's 64. The president of Midhurst, Geoff Ward, presented the cup to Petersfield captain Doreen Oliver.

The rain stopped as the teams sat down for tea.

STEDHAM

In the league, Stedham A lost at home to Rowledge 4-1 and the B team lost by the same score at Liphook.

In a rearranged fixture with Milford in division one, Stedham lost 5-0.
The only friendly of the week at home resulted in a 50-42 win for Sutton.

Next Monday, Stedham will have the honour of playing host to the Sussex vice-presidents for the first time. The match starts at 2.30pm and all are welcome to watch.

BROOKS MOTORS LEAGUE

In division one, Norfolk lead with 31 points from nine games, followed by Hotham A with 27 points also from nine.

The next three clubs are still in the race: Arundel have 23 points from seven games, Pagham 23 points from six and Chichester 22 from seven.

It is still wide open and looks like being a very interesting few weeks.
In division two, Aldingbourne look to be heading for the title with only Middleton and Pulborough still able to catch them.

Aldingbourne lead with 42 points from ten games and Middleton are second with 32 points from nine.

Results: Division 1: Norfolk 45 (6pts) Pagham 27 (0pts) (Hills 23 Mayoss 11; Ayling 22 English 16).

Division 2: Pulborough 47 (6pts) Southbourne 18 (0pts) (Broadribb 28 Odell 7; Osbourne 19 Grief 11); RAFA 46 (4pts) Aldingbourne 32 (2pts) (Jackson 27 Weidenhoeft 10; Donaldson 19 Richards 22).

C&M TROPHY LADIES' LEAGUE

Division one: Beach Park 36 Maltravers 40 (Beach Park 2pts, Maltravers 4pts, B Whelpdale 15 F Steele 27, G Webb 21 A Rand 13), Crablands 50 Maltravers 27 (6pts Crablands, C Bowles 23 A Rand 17, M Brown 27 F Steele 10).

Division two: Shoreham 32 Lancing 50 (6pts Lancing, J Pearson 13 B Gosden 27, M Turnidge 19 E Hooker 23), Storrington 54 East Preston 27 (6pts Storrington, J Ackerman 32 J Pidgeon 10, P Bain 22 I Morris 17), Bognor 38 Lancing 55 (2pts Bognor, 4pts Lancing).
