CHICHESTER beach volleyball ace Tom Lord was selected to play for GB at the World Tour event in Sanya, China.

He and partner Jody Gooding achieved qualification to the main draw of the event – for the top 32 teams – beating the Angolan No1 team who competed in Beijing.

They became the first GB team to win a first-round main draw game, defeating legends of the sport, three-time Olympians and eighth seeds Hoidalen and Kjemperud from Norway.

In subsequent rounds they lost to Sweden and the seventh seeded Swiss team, finishing 17th in the tournament, equalling the best result ever achieved by a GB team at the sport's highest level.

Lord is one of the nominees in the sportsman of the year category at this Sunday's (Dec 14) Observer Community Awards, to be held at the Chichester Festival Theatre.
