THE ROCKS got their pre-season off to a winning start, with Howard Neighbour's strike early in the second half enough to see off Selsey at the High Street Ground.
Neighbour, who netted 22 times for Arundel last season, scored with virtually his first touch – slamming home the loose ball when Selsey keeper Rob McLelland could only parry – after entering the fray as a substitute.

Until that point, Bognor's youngsters had dominated proceedings without finding a way through as Darin Killpartrick's pass-and-move manifesto left the Blues chasing shadows.

It was to Matt Wood who came closest to breaking the deadlock, the 18-year-old receiving the ball with his back to goal, turning smartly and curling a shot that left McLelland stranded, only to hit the crossbar and drop safe.

The inevitable glut of substitutions followed half-time and the quality of play suffered as a result, Louis Castles providing a rare moment of inspiration as he ended a mazy run with a low shot that McLellan had to beat away.

Worrying scenes followed a heavy tackle on Andy Brown as the Selsey midfielder was stretchered off and an ambulance summoned but the diagnosis proved to be nothing more than a concussion.

Neighbour should have doubled his, and Bognor's, tally late on when the Blues defence waited in vain for an offside flag, but his shot lacked conviction and floated wide of the post.
