Southbourne made to struggle on the greens

Bowlers from Southbourne, Chichester, Petworth, Fishbourne, the Witterings, Hotham, Stedham and Norfolk clubs all feature in our latest round-up of the rinks.
SOUTHBOURNE

Arundel 43 Southbourne 30

Southbourne struggled to earn one point on a difficult grass green in the Brooks Motors League.

Scores: H Barnett, JC Lillywhite, A Odell drew 18-18 (1pt); J Jennings, J Staker, M Odell lost 25-12.

On a damp, windy afternoon, Southbourne battled hard against lively Arundel.

Skip J Game's triple were 11-9 down at the 11th but a resurgence from his bowlers saw them to a 28-12 win.

Scores: G Whitaker, M Baylis, J Game won 28-12; D Walters, T Roden, C Soper lost 27-8; B Hemmings, A Williams, W Coates lost 18-12.

Waterlooville 67 Southbourne 60

In the Reflex League, although winning three of the available four triples, Southbourne earned only six points because of being penalised.

Scores: L Williams, JC Lillywhite, A Odell won 24-11 (2pts); M Hamm, D Alner, P Garrard won 22-12 (2pts); D Young, T Hamm, M Odell won 18-10 (2pts); G Whitaker, M Baylis, J Staker lost 34-6.

Southbourne 80 Worthing Grasshoppers 56

In an enjoyable friendly encounter with the Grasshoppers, Southbourne ran out winners by 24 shots.

Scores: M Odell, C Soper, A Odell won 33-7; D Walter, J Game, J Staker won 22-10; B Aston, D Moseley, W Coates won 18-15; JC Lillywhite, JA Lillywhite, P Garrard won 24-7.

CHICHESTER

Chichester 75 City Club 106

Chichester were one shot up in their annual match for the Alan Bowler Trophy, but the City Club took control and pulled away to win the match by 31 shots.

Scores (Chichester names first): P Doust, E Ball, D Schofield drew with J Walters, I Linfield, E Rooke 14-14; L Stewart, S Meyer, R Hobbs lost to P Merritt, P Howick, B Talmage 17-12; G Beagley, R Sparrow, P Whale bt Mrs J Hole, A Stewart, A Bowler 19-13; B Hole, D Gray, V Mitchell lost to Mrs C Hobbs, L Shipp, B Butler 24-3; B Taylor, Mrs M Schofield, A Anderson lost to K Talmage, Mrs S Baverstock, M Page 18-12; T Richards, G Buckle, J Heasman lost to J Sharrod, K Burt, T Gaffney 20-15.

PETWORTH

Billingshurst 64 Petworth 73

A very enjoyable game was had at Billingshurst with Petworth winning on two rinks but taking the match by nine points.

Scores: B Jones, J Carling, G Allen won 25-12; P Spears, S Allen, A Jordan lost 21-17; J Dormer, K Mitchell, E West lost 17-16; R Haley, T Whittington, M Booth won 15-14.

Pulborough 49 Petworth 84

This was a good friendly game of bowls, with Petworth coming good on the grass and winning on three of the four rinks – and by 35 shots overall.

Scores: D Latter, A Jordan, G Ives won 29-8; C Jury, T Brooks, T Whittington lost 19-9; J Carline, C Peacock, G Allen, won 28-5; P Herrington, S Allen, CA Latter won 18-17.

Petworth 105 Grasshoppers 37

Although Petworth won by 68 shots overall, it was a very good game.

Scores: P Spears, M Booth, C Spears won 23-7; A Northeast, M Monk, A Catterson won 29-5; C Jury, A Jordan, G Ives won 25-14; P Herrington, T Whittington, D Herbert won 28-11.

FISHBOURNE

Fishbourne 71 Middleton 52

Scores: D Green, D Humphries, F Heil lost 16-15; C Lankshear, B Cobie, P White won 14-13; G Poland, G Summers, M Bleach won 23-11; S Lewis, S Jones, P Green won 19-12.

Fishbourne 98 Midhurst 54

Scores: S Lewis, I Roberts, M Bleach won 25-13; M Keane, D Jeffreys, P White won 20-14; J Conway, V Frost, B Wallsgrove won 25-15; E Keane, M Beasley, L Kneale won 28-12.

Fishbourne 67 Flansham 96
Scores: D Green, K Ridley, P Massey lost 23-10; J Summers, N Saunders, P Green won 18-12; J Conway, G Summers, P White lost 20-15; E Keane, J Wingate, F Heil won 17-12; K Makin, A Saunders, L Kneale lost 29-7.

Sutton 47 Fishbourne 56

Scores: M Keane, G Randall, B Wallsgrove lost 18-16; G Poland, K Fancy, P Green won 27-10; I Roberts, M Beasley, L Kneale lost 19-13.

WITTERINGS

Middleton 37 Witterings 41

Witterings played at Middleton in the BM Triples Mixed League and won, gaining four points.

Scores: B Cruikshank, R Hanbury, G Thomas (s) won 25-15 (top rink); A Andrew, P White, P Lillywhite (s) lost 22-16.

Witterings played a men's friendly and a ladies' friendly the same day.
The men lost 56-27.

Scores: K Jenkins, M Thresher, M Edwards, B McCombe (s) lost 29-12; A Gibbs, M Lillywhite, T Mulligan, D Purse (s) lost 27-15.

The ladies' won on their only friendly rink.

Results: M Cruikshank, M Aylward, M Mulligan, B Newman (s) won 26-18.

HOTHAM

RAFA 25 Hotham 44

Hotham picked up five points from this Brooks Motors Mixed League win.
Scores: P Ewers, F Peach, T Sayers drew 17-17; P Dale, M Smith, D Ewers won 27-8.

Hotham 43 Chichester 41

Hotham dramatically snatched victory from Chichester on the last end of this mixed league match.

Hotham also won on the friendly triple.

Scores: D Cooke, D Ewers, P Hannam won 27-19, M Smith, J Whitfield, T Sayers lost 22-16; J Hall, L Hall, P Dale won 25-10

Crablands 83 Hotham 67

Hotham picked up two points at Crablands in the Littlehampton Gazette League.

Scores: B Sandford, P Walsh, D Ewers, P Hannam won 22-12; D Dalton, L Hall, J Whitfield, J Roots lost 25-14; K Hellyer, L Greenaway, P Dale, R Bell lost 23-9; F Peach, B Stabler, B Olver, T Sayers lost 23-22.

STEDHAM

In the Three Counties, Stedham A got back to winning ways with a resounding 5-0 win at Alton Social. The B team kept up their winning form by beating Petersfield 3½-1½.

The first midweek friendly of the season saw Graffham win at Stedham.
The second in-house competition of the season ended with a win for Terry Berry and Carol Boxall over Stan Glazebrook and Derek Christmas.

NORFOLK

Norfolk's division-three team had two great wins to go top of the table. They took seven points out of a possible ten from Field Place, with Peter Warren and Eric Puttick winning on both rinks, John Collins drawing on his and Don Taffurelli losing by one shot.

They then played Aldingbourne and took nine of the available ten points. Norfolk had three winning rinks and one was a draw.

An exciting game took place in the last round of the Abergavenny Cup when Norfolk played Petworth. One team played at Norfolk, the other at Petworth.

Ken Botting's team, playing away against Mark Lancaster's, lost 23-13. Norfolk's home team, skipped by Roger Ayling against Kyle McGowen, won 28-18. It was a draw and an extra end had to be played.

Norfolk won the extra end and will play a county quarter-final against White Rock of Hastings.

Norfolk played East Preston in the Hotham Tens. Playing for Norfolk in the singles was Lew Mockett, who played Merv Hilton. Mockett lost 21-15.

The pairs featured Ray Leggett and Malcolm Hosking, who won 22-21. The triples was won by Trevor Sandalls, David Mann and Ken Botting 27-16.

The fours lost 21-18 with a team of Dave Richardson, David Poole, Derek Fisher and Roger Ayling. The overall score was an 82-79 win for Norfolk.

C&M LADIES' TROPHY LEAGUE

Division one: Beach Park (4pts) 43 Storrington (2pts) 35 (S Wilcox 32 P Baines 11, I Heddon 11 B Harwood 24); Beach Park (6pts) 51 Chichester 32 (S Wilcox 27 W Adams 16, P Hayward 24 M Potter 16); Storrington 26 Maltravers (6pts) 58 (E Streeter 9 F Steele 32, B Harwood 17 B Butcher 26).
