Tooley turns in another champion display

Reigning Chichester singles champion Simon Tooley is through to the last eight in England in the National Champion of Champions competition.

After having qualified for the regional zone finals, Tooley had to play three Surrey opponents in one day.

He beat Simon Fishlock from Tongham 22-19, Danny Wilkinson 21-13 from Seale and Doug Spittles 21-13 from Shirley.

It was a long day in a grueling 25 degrees.

At the start of the final, Tooley found himself 10-0 in five ends and struggling to find the weight, or green, but after winning an end and changing the length by bringing the mat up, he started to find his rhythm and his opponent went off.

Tooley went on to win 21 points, while only losing another two.

This win puts him into the last eight in the country and is Sussex's sole representative, with the finals to be played at Worthing Beach House Park on Sunday, August 9.

Chichester ladies continued their success in the double rink
competition, winning the zone final versus Middleton.

Success also came in the Gladys Rowland Memorial Trophy: Mary Potter, Maura Field, Betty Spicer and April Janman won 21-11 visiting the Isle of Thorns.

In the champion of champions, Betty Spicer is in the quarter-finals, meeting Steyning in the next round.

Chichester 74 Leigh Park 57

Chichester's away squad did well to hold Leigh Park to just two shots while their home side produced a fine 19 shot win to put Chichester into the next round of the Hotham Open Tens competition.

Scores: Home: P Whale won 21-15; T Arnold, J Pickard, J Heasman, M Page won 21-8. Away: D Schofield, G Leaman lost 16-15; I Linfield, B Talmage, A Anderson lost 18-17.

Arundel 71 Chichester 77

This was an even contest with each team winning on two rinks, but Chichester just had the edge and won the game by six shots.

Scores: R Percival, A Stewart, R Hobbs, F Field won 24-16; J Rumble, L Shipp, T Hall, J Heasman lost 20-15; R Smith, A Daines, V Mitchell, A Bowler lost 20-13; D Gray, M Johnson, B Money, J Pickard won 25-15.

Chichester 56 Liphook 67

Chichester had a narrow three shot win in the home leg of the Midhurst Cup but their away team were defeated by 14 shots at Liphook and so Chichester lost by 11 shots.

Scores: Home: G Buckle, C Wade, B Butler lost 20-15; L Shipp, B Talmage, G Leaman won 20-12. Away: T Arnold, P Howick, F Field lost 17-13; J Williams, M Lewis, A Bowler lost 18-8.

SOUTHBOURNE

Waterlooville 90 Southbourne 65

Southbourne managed to win only two out of the five triples played.
Scores: A Lillywhite, J Staker, D House won16-10; JC Lillywhite, M Baylis, A Greenfield won 19-15; A Williams, D Moseley, M Odell lost 20-8; M Moseley, C Young, C Soper lLost 26-10; A Bull, K Lockyer, J A Lillywhite lost 19-12.

Cowplain 99 Southbourne 70

In another away Reflex match against Cowplain, Southbourne won on only one of the five triples.

Scores: H Barnett, J A Lillywhite, D House lost 19-12; D Walter, J Staker, S Heil lost 22-9; F Brimecome, M Baylis, P Garrard lost 20-16;
C Petchey, C Young, M Odell won 24-16; K Alner, D Alner, C Soper lost 22-9.

Southbourne 71 Worthing Grasshoppers 63

Southbourne played a friendly at home to Worthing Grasshoppers. Both sides won on two rinks, with Southbourne the overall winner.

Scores: D Walter, J C Lillywhite, P Garrard won 28-5; A Williams, JA Lillywhite, J Staker lost 21-11; L Walter, F Heil, C Young lost 22-12; J Jennings, B Aston, C Soper won 20-15.

Arundel 83 Southbourne 75

Southbourne men played at Arundel in the Littlehampton Gazette League winning on two of the four rinks but just failing to win overall.

Scores: R Galloway, D House, R Bull, C Soper lost 21-11; C Young, J Staker, D Fewell, A Bull won 26-22; J Scorey, J Kingswell, A Grief, F Armstrong lost 23-18; M Soper, A Smith, D Alner, R Armstrong won 20-17.

Southbourne v Fishbourne

Southbourne went to Fishbourne for a friendly, playing two triples and one pairs match.

Scores: I Jennings, A Williams, C Young lost 18-15; L Williams, JC Lillywhite, P Garrard drew 14-14; J Jennings, D Young lost 28-13.

Southbourne 40 Wittering 33

In a home match in the BM League, Southourne won on one rink and just failed to win on the other gaining an overall win.

Scores: JC Lillywhite, C Young, A Greenfield won 24-16; A Lillywhite, J Staker, S Heil lost 17-16.

Southbourne visited Hayling Island in the Reflex League and lost by 12 points to two. Only four triples were played as Southbourne were short of one lady player.

Scores: B Aston, C Young, S Heil lost 27-5; D Walter, D Fewell, M Odell lost 19-11; I Jennings, M Soper, A Grief won 25-15; JC Lillywhite,
M Baylis, J Staker lost 16-12.

PETWORTH

Petworth played only 12 out of 18 ends at Sutton because or rain, and went down 33-25.

Scores: B Stevens, B Walsh, A Jordan lost 11-10, C Peacock, J Heyes, T Whittington lost 13-8, P Herrington, W Bryder, K Mitchell lost 9-7.

Petworth visited Arundel in the PC Cup and lost by just two points.
Scores: A Northeast, A Jordan, M Monk, M Lancaster lost 22-12, N Short, B Walsh, D Miles,M Lillywhite lost 26-13, P Miles, E West, L Corne, G Ives won 24-12, P Herrington, D Herbert, M Ives, K McGowan won 25-16.

Petworth won a two-triples friendly versus Graffham 58-17.

Scores: P Herrington, S Allen, A Jordan won 23-10, C Peacock, W Bryder, T Whittington won 35-7.

FISHBOURNE

Fishbourne 60 Southbourne 42

Southwick Park 92 Fishbourne 75

Because of rain, some rinks played only 15 ends at Southwick Park.

Petworth had a narrow win over Arundel, 85-84 the score.

WITTERINGS

Witterings 33 Southbourne 40

Witterings played away at Southbourne in the Mixed BM League and won on one rink and lost on one, gaining two points.

Scores: P Chivers, M Mulligan, S Hooker lost 24-16, T Mulligan, P Hutton, K Maxwell won 17-16.

Witterings 60 Norfolk 86

Witterings men played at home to Norfolk in the Littlehampton Gazette League but lost on all four rinks, gaining no points.

Scores: A Somerville, T Mulligan, F Knotts, D Bell (s) lost 22-15; L Cross, K Maxwell, L Andrew, B Horsley (s) lost 21-16, G Thomas, L Bangs, E Shoyer, J Simmonds (s) lost 25-13; B Curtis, M Grabowski, J Hostler, D Leach (s) lost 18-16.

Wittering Ladies 42 Shoreham 31

Wittering had a very good win, gaining back the six points they lost to Shoreham a few weeks ago.

Scores: A Andrew, M Corbett, M Aylward, C Horsley (s) won 20-17, Di Leach, P Hutton, M Mulligan, P Lillywhite (s) won 22-14.

Witterings held a mixed invitation tournament. The five visiting teams were Rogate, Pagham, Arundel, Bognor and Milford. Each played three lots of seven ends.

The winning team were from Pagham, Diana and Eric Mitchell and Sheila and John Stocker, who scored 21 points.

The winning Wittering team of Fred Knotts, Bruce Cruickshank, Marina Aylward and Marion Corbett scored 27 points.

After the game everyone sat down to a meal provided by Jean Edwards and Jim Slogrove. President Carole Tuffin presented prizes.

CRABLANDS

Crablands 80 Storrington 75
Crablands Ladies 39 Storrington 39

When Crablands played host to Storrington, the men picked up eight points in the league and the ladies enjoyed two friendly rinks ending in a draw overall.

Crablands Ladies 54 Storrington 30

Crablands played at Storrington with the men finding the going
difficult, they managed to pick up only two league points.

Scores: J Tyrrell, M Clements, D Clacey, D Adams lost 21-18, D Eggleton, J Saunders, R Eastland, L Jewiss lost 27-18, D Jonas, A Blyth, J Harman, R Humphrey lost 16-13, B Berry, L Dray, A Humphreys, M Heasman won 19-18.

The ladies fared better, winning on both rinks.

Scores: B Neate, J Harman, B Chandler, M Everest won 33-15, M Brown, S Brooks, S Blyth, J Byrne won 21-15.

Two teams from Crablands attended the Benevolent two-wood triples at Kingways and Hove, with one team (B Neate, J Lindley, M Brown)
progressing to the quarter-finals, to be held at Horsham on August 23.

Crablands 62 Tarring Priory 99

Crablands travelled to Tarring Priory for a league game, only to be beaten on all rinks.

Scores: B Whittle, R Shambrook, C Pestle, L Jewiss lost 20-15, B Berry, L Dray, J Tyrrell, M Heasman lost 28-15, M Clements, D Eggleton, J Brown, J Harman lost 24-14, J Saunders, E Potz, A Bateman, R Humphrey lost 27-18.

Crablands ladies travelled to East Preston for the next round of the Top Club contest.

A miserable morning playing in the driving rain proved too much, with the team winning in the singles and fours, losing the pairs and triples, and going down overall on shot difference by three shots.

On a better day, Crablands ladies played their two-wood to the
yardstick competition, playing through to the semi-finals. Finalists are Val Tyrrell and Carol Bowles.

FITTLEWORTH

Fittleworth Bowling Club held their Pairs Cup competition.

The winners, winning four out of their five games, were Sue Judd and Muriel Cook. Runners-up with three wins out of their five games, were Betty Williams and Audrey Hodgson.

BROOKS MOTORS LEAGUE
In division one, Hotham A take over top spot with 27 points from nine games, with Arundel second with 23 points from seven games and Chichester third with 22 points from seven.

In division two, Aldingbourne remain top unbeaten with 40 points from seven games, with Southbourne second on 28 points from seven.
