Big weekend ahead for Chichester athletes
Two of Chichester's junior teams are in action this weekend - while two individuals fly to Gateshead for the UK Youth Games.
Tomorrow, the Sussex under-15 final at Lewes sees nine teams competing, providing Chichester with a stern test with nationally-ranked athletes on show. But a similar performance to the final Young Athletes league match in July will mean they should give a good account of themselves.
On Sunday the club's under-13s look to maintain a record of never having finished outside the top four clubs of ten of the best Sussex junior teams in their final at the K2 Stadium in Crawley.
The event often gives a first glimpse of stars of the future in sprints, middle distance and field events.
Two athletes have the honour of competing in the prestigious UK Youth Games alongside contenders for the Olympics in 2016 and 2020.
Izzy Brown in the high jump and Jamie Moore in the pole vault compete for the south of England against competitors from across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
This will be their highest representative honours so far.
n Three Chichester young athletes were on duty for Sussex over the weekend and had to combat some of the worst conditions of the summer in their inter-county match at Hendon, North London.
George Grainger produced a gritty performance in the 400m hurdles for third place 57.5sec, which in the circumstances was the equivalent of a 55sec performance.
Nathalie Godden and Sophie Millet had the misfortune to be tackling the jumps. Both Godden and Millett cleared 1.45m in the high jump, with Millet near her best at 2.80 in the pole vault.
n James Baker produced another dominant display to win the Arundel 10k road race on Sunday to add to his summer collection of victories, which number 11 from his past 13 starts.
This will stand him in good stead for the winter, where he will be aiming to make his mark at both cross-country and on the road with fast 10k and half marathon times likely after sharpening his speed on the track.
Another Chichester athlete showing good form was Tony Roddis, who scooped the top veterans' prize at Arundel.
