Bowls: Sun shines for a big bowling birthday
There's action from the greens at Witterings, Pagham, Crablands, Southbourne, Petworth, Fishbourne, Fittleworth and Stedham in our latest bowls round-up.
WITTERINGS
Witterings & District BC enjoyed a fun weekend in good weather to celebrate their 40th anniversary.
Saturday saw six triples played in a light-hearted atmosphere, the winners being Paul Chivers, Wendy Beadman and Bruce Cruickshank. A buffet tea was provided by the lady members.
The climax was the cutting of a magnificent birthday cake made by Marina Aylward featuring a bowls match in icing. Every member was
presented with a commemorative handkerchief.
On Sunday, the bowls was even more informal with members taking part in a spoon drive where each player recorded their total individual score throughout three different matches.
Winners were Wyn Winnum for the ladies and Barry Horsley for the men, each taking home a celebratory teaspoon. A barbecue wrapped up the day.
Wittering 60 Worthing Pavilion 24
Witterings ladies played at home in the C&M League against Worthing Pavilion and won on both rinks.
Scores: M Corbett, M Mullican, C Tuffin, B Newman (s) won 26-12; J Edwards, A Andrew, M Aylward, C Horsley (s) won 34-24.
PAGHAM
Maltravers took two ladies' rinks to play Pagham in the C&M League.
Pagham picked up four points, winning on one rink only but winning the match 50.33.
Scores: Carol Penny, Joan Wells, Chris Mayoss, Maureen King won 28-14, Diana Mitchell, Sylvia Pugh, Sheila Stocker, Pam Robinson lost 22-19.
Two friendly triples joined the game, winning 42-21.
Scores: Gay Stewart, Margaret Rees, Doreen Ellis won 27-8, Judy Warner, Joyce Ival,Dean, Gill Dart won 15-13.
Pagham men played at East Preston B, winning on three rinks and picking up eight points with a 79-73 win.
Scores: Robert Pearson, Mick Adams, Mervyn Mulvey, Mike English won 30-14, Daniel Lovell, Brian Sales, Douglas Vaughan, Paul Mayoss won 19-12, Dave Spink, Peter Heaver, Eric Mitchell, John Newell won 18-17, Nick Terry, Bagsy Smith, John Stewart, Roy Livermore lost 30-12.
Pagham men lost at home and away against Maltravers in the Abergavenny double rink and are now out of this competition.
The ladies picked up four points in the C&M League against Maltravers and two points in the C&M League against Beach Park.
Pagham men, playing at home, lost 80-72 in the league against Aldingbourne, picking up three points.

Crablands 41 Arundel 26
Crablands met Arundel in the BM League, winning on one rink and
drawing on the other.

Crablands 53 Chichester 89
Crablands men lost all ten points in the Littlehampton Gazette League against Chichester.

Crablands 59 Hotham 67
Crablands played at Hotham, winning on the two friendly rinks but losing by 19 shots on the BM League rinks. Top rink was Crablands was skipped by Y Clifton.

Crablands 131 East Preston 103
Crablands took six rinks to East Preston for a friendly afternoon of bowls. Top rink was a ladies' one skipped by Marion Brown.

Crablands ladies have two teams through to county semi-finals day at Haywards Heath.
In the pairs, it's Grace Humphreys and Carol Bowles and in the fours, it's Grace Humphreys, Marie Nutt, Jackie Rawlins and Carol Bowles.
In the county unbadged two-wood competition, Joan Lindley has qualified for the semi-finals, to be be played on county finals day at Lewes.
SOUTHBOURNE
Southbourne men played Storrington in the Abergavenney Cup and won by one shot.
Dave Alner, Robin Armstrong, Antony Bull and Paul Butler have reached the quarter-finals of the county fours after beating Worthing Pavilion.
Southbourne 83 Telepost 65
Southbourne Bowls Club were away to Telepost in a friendly Triples Match, winning on three out of the four rinks.
Scores: A Williams, J Jennings, M Odell won 24-16; I Jennings, J Scorey, P Garrard won 25-10; K Alner, D House, J Staker won 21-18; L Williams, D Young, C Young lost 21-13.
Southbourne 49 Middleton 26
Southbourne played a home match against Middleton in the BML league and won on both rinks.
Scores: J Jennings, J Staker, M Odell beat D Jenkins, K Jenkins, J Bagley 27-18; A Greenfield, C Young, S Heil beat A Chandler, N Robertson, T Finch 22-8.
A further friendly rink was played on the same day and again Southourne managed a win.
Southbourne 79 West Tarring 70
Southbourne men were away to West Tarring in a Littlehampton Gazette Bowls League match. In a close game, Southbourne finally succeeded in
winning overall.

PETWORTH
Petworth won on two rinks and drew on one – but wtill lost to Grasshoppers.
Scores: J Dormer, S Miles, K McGowan won 18-12, P Miles, M Bacon, M Lillywhite drew 14-14, S Allen, J Heyes, A Jordan won 15-13, A Northeast, D Herbert, M Monk lost 23-14.
Midhurst paid Petworth a visit for a return match and went down on all three rinks as Petworth won 67-36.

FISHBOURNE
Witterings 85 Fishbourne 51
Scores: S Wingate, J Wingate, T Bleach lost 32-8, B Rice, B Henham, A Saunders won 22-10, A Whitney, M Bleach, P Massey lost 21-12, N Saunders, S Jones, P White lost 22-9.
Fittleworth 47 Fishbourne 43
This very testing green gave the hosts a win by four shots only.
Scores: D Humphreys, K Fancy, S Heil lost 16-12, C Jury, G Evans, M Bleach won 17-12, J Summers, G Randall, F Heil lost 19-14.
A Fishbourne team won the Graffham open afternoon tournament by one shot against Midhurst. The victorious trio were E Keane, V Frost and M Keane.
FITTLEWORTH
Fittleworth lost 73-32 at Arundel.
Scores: John Moody, Norman Goodyer, Peter Banks lost 27-7; Ron Jones, Muriel Cook, Alan Jordan drew 13-13, Pat Perry, Audrey Hodgson, Peter Cook lost 33-12.
Playing at Stedham, Fittleworth lost 60-37.
Scores: Ron Jones, Norman Goodyer, Michael Gander lost 24-12; Michael Ryan, Alvar Etherington, Peter Cook lost: 19-10; John Moody, Muriel Cook, Betty Williams lost 17-15.
Fittleworth won 47-43 at home to Fishbourne.
Scores: Pat Perry, Audrey Hodgson, Sue Judd won
19-14; John Moody, Pauline Gilpin, Gina Barnfield won 16-12; Ron Jones, Michael Ryan, Norman Goodyer lost 17-12.
At home to Norfolk, there was a 77-28 defeat for Fittleworth.
Scores: Alvar Etherington, Audrey Hodgson, Sue Judd lost 17-13, Muriel Cook, Peter Cook, Bernard Adsett lost 32-7; Pauline Gilpin, Gina Barnfield, Michael Gander lost 28-8.
STEDHAM
It was a bad week in the league with the A side losing 5-0 at Wonersh in division one and the B side losing 3-2 at home to Liphook.
In the weekend's friendlies, Stedham did a little better beating Pulborough 64-47 and RAFA 52-43.
Stedham had a 58-40 defeat in the Holbrook Cup second round at Hotham on Sunday.
BROOKS MOTORS LEAGUE
In division one, Arundel continue at the top with 23 points from seven games, closely followed by Chichester with 20 from six.
Pagham are third with a maximum 18 points from their three games.
In division two, Aldingbourne remain top – unbeaten after seven games but having dropped two points in their last game.
They are 12 points ahead of second-placed Southbourne, who have played eight games.
