Bowls: Riverside hosts are swept away by Crablands

Crablands, Petworth, Pagham, Southbourne, Stedham, Chichester, Bognor, Witterings and Fishbourne bowlers all feature in our latest round-up from local greens.

CRABLANDS

Walton-on-Thames 82 Crablands 98

Crablands enjoyed their trip to the riverside. They won by 16 shots at Walton-on-Thames. The top rink was skipped by Jim Saunders.

Crablands 73 Little Spain 95

Crablands played host to neighbours Little Spain, but managed to win on only one rink.

Norfolk 101 Crablands 55

Crablands lost on all rinks.

Crablands played their ladies versus gents game, with the men just taking the game 74-71. Top rink for the men were R Osborn, D Jones, J Brown and J Saunders, who won 24-11.

PETWORTH

Petworth lost only on one rink in a friendly against Pulborough. Petworth won 123-59.

Scores: W Bryder, K Mitchell, G Allen lost 24-10, P Herrington, D Herbert, T Whittington won 22-11, D Latter, B Walsh, G Ives won 31-7, C Peacock, M Bacon, A Jordan won 27-10, S Allen, E West, M Lancaster won 33-7.

PAGHAM

Pagham fielded two mixed triples in the BM League versus Norfolk. Pagham picked up five points with a 35-31 win.

Scores: Diana Mitchell, Maureen King, Peter Brooker drew 18-18; Iris Brooker, Doughlas Vaughan, Paul Mayoss won 17-13.

Five mixed friendly rinks against Knaphill saw Pagham win 113-111.

Scores: Janet Boucher, Roy Hart, Chris Mayoss, Mervy Melvey won 28-12; John Warner, Barry Baines, Marlene Steel, Annie Ross lost 21-20; Gay Stewart, Eileen Terry, John Stocker, Maureen King won 23-14; Brian Farr, Judy Warner, Dave Spink, Paul Mayoss won 26-21; Eddie Minter, Betty Williams, Sheila Stocker, Shirley Hart lost 35-14.

Four Pagham men's rinks won 83-62 against Worthing Pavilion.

Six mixed rinks in a friendly against Hampton saw Pagham win 120-103.

SOUTHBOURNE

Middleton 32 Southbourne 30

Southbourne played a mixed away match at Middleton. Of the four triples, two were friendlies and the other two were in the BM League where Southbourne won on one green and just failed to win overall.

Scores: J Jennings, C Soper, M Odell won 18-10; C Young, J Staker, S Heil lost 22-12; B Aston, D Young, A Greenfield lost 24-7; I Jennings, A Williams, JC Lillywhite lost 25-5.

Pulborough 47 Southbourne 18

In the BM League, Southbourne lost at Pulborough.

Scores: C Young, H Greenfield, A Grief lost 19-11; J Jennings, JC Lillywhite, M Odell lost 28-7.

STEDHAM

A mixed week in the league saw the A side lose 5-0 at Bourne in division one and the B side winning in division three by the same score at home to Headley.

In a friendly at Rogate, Stedham drew 2-2 on rinks but Rogate won with a score of 70-57.

At Billingshurst, Stedham won 2-1 on rinks to record a 60-43 win. Next day in the rain, a close game with Petworth resulted in a 51-50 win for Stedham.

CHICHESTER

Storrington 81 Chichester 71

Storrington has not been one of Chichester's favourite venues in recent seasons and this year proved no exception as Chichester secured three league points.

The home team were 15 shots ahead after 15 ends although Chichester clawed back five shots over the last six ends they still lost by ten shots.

Chichester 78 East Preston 73

Chichester squeezed into the semi-finals of the Hotham Open Tens competition with a narrow five shot win over East Preston. Their home team won by three shots while their away squad battled to a two shot win.

Scores: Home – D Schofield, G Leaman won 23-17; B Talmage, F Field, A Anderson lost 19-16. Away – P Whale won 21-20; C Porter, P Howick, J Heasman, M Page won 18-17.

BOGNOR

Bognor 70 Worthing 69

It was another thriller at Waterloo Square against old rivals Worthing.

The game was not decided until the last wood was bowled, as Dave Parker's ring collected the vital one shot to give Bognor victory.

FITTLEWORTH

Fittleworth Bowling Club lost 61-32 at Midhurst.

Scores: Muriel Cook, Mike Ryan, Sue Judd lost 22-14; Pat Perry, Audrey Hodgson, Gina Barnfield lost 18-12; Ron Jones, Pauline Gilpin, Peter Cook lost 21-6.

BROOKS MOTORS LEAGUE

The situation at the top of division one is very tight.

Hotham A lead with 27 points from nine games, followed by Norfolk with 25 points from eight, Pagham (23 from five), Arundel (23 from seven) and Chichester (22 from seven).

It is still very open and any of the top five could still win the title.

In division two, Aldingbourne remain in the lead – 12 points clear of Southbourne and Middleton. All have three games remaining.

SHORT MAT

BOGNOR GOOD-WOODS

Good-Woods Magpies had a good result against Ashington Ditchers, winning 11 points out of 14.

The first mat triples team were F Kaucher, E Jones and D Fair (skip).

The last end saw Magpies leading by two shots but a good recovery by

the Ditchers levelled the score to 13-13 and in the draw, they took a point each.

Kaucher played the singles, and at end eight the score was 8-7.

However, Kaucher pulled away for a final score of 12-8.

The pairs was played by Jones and Fair and they won 10-7.

On the second mat, the triples were played by R Jalley, M Fair and B Mills (captain).

From the start, Magpies were much too strong for the Ditchers and won the triples 16-6.

Mills played the singles and were 11-6 up at end seven.

Ditchers had a brave recovery winning the last four ends and the

singles game to a score of 14-11 to them.

The pairs were played by Fair and Jalley and this was a one-way affair for the Magpies as they won 13-5.

WITTERINGS

Witterings 85 Fishbourne 51

Witterings played a mixed friendly against Fishbourne and had mixed results, winning on three rinks.

Scores: P Hutton, J Bangs, P White (s) lost 22-10, M White, L Bangs, M Mulligan (s) won 32-8 (top rink), G Ingles, R Hanbury, E Shoyer (s) won 21-12, A Andrew, T Mulligan, F Knotts (s) won 22-9.

Bognor Ladies 47 Witterings Ladies 41

Witterings played in the C&M League at Bognor and won on one rink and lost on one, gaining two points.

Scores: J Edwards, M Aylward, B Newman, C Horsley (s) won 26-17, A Andrew, M Mulligan, C Tuffin, P Lillywhite (s) lost 30-15.

Chichester 124 Witterings 85

Witterings played at Chichester in a triples men's friendly, winning on three rinks and losing on three, but Chichester had the edge.

Hurstpierpoint 9 Witterings 26

Witterings ladies played in the Gladys Rowland Cup at Hurstpierpoint Bowling Club and had a good win.

Scores: A Andrew, M Corbett, M Aylward, C Horsley (s) won 26-9.

Beach House Park 72 Witterings 72

Witterings played away in the Top Club against Beach House Park. The end score was a draw, so the pairs, triples and rinks all had to play an extra end to get a winning result, which Witterings took 2-1.
