Roger Charlton enjoyed a 48/1 double as Goodwood’s new season of flat racing began in beautiful sunshine on the Downs.

He saw former Goodwood ambassador Hayley Turner take the card’s second listed race, the British Stallion Studs EBF Conqueror Stakes for fillies and mares, on 6/1 chance Be My Gal.

Then Pat Dobbs guided home Temptress (8/1) - tipped on this website before racing - in the Betfred Racing’s Biggest Supporter Median Auction Maiden Stakes.

The season opener’s other listed race, the EBF Stallions Daisy Warwick Stakes, went to Franny Norton riding Special Meaning (9/2) for Mark Johnston.

There was Goodwood success for a trainer whose runners are normally seen over the jumps in the opening race as Gary Moore saw George Baker ride 11/8 favourite Civil War to victory in the Betfred History Making £5 Million Scoop6 Today Stakes handicap. That was the first leg of a double for Baker.

Up-and-coming rider Oisin Murphy claimed the Play £5 Million Scoop6 At totepool.com Stakes on 3/1 market leader Absolutely So, while the big-priced winner of the day came in the Follow Scoop6 At totepoolliveinfo.com Stakes handicap, taken by Pandar, who went off at 40/1 under Philip Prince for trainer Milton Bradley.

In the last, the totepool.com Stakes handicap, Baker completed his double on Arab Dawn, the Hughie Morrison-trained 3/1 joint favourite.

There’ll be a full report from the meeting, plus pictures, in the Chichester Observer on Thursday.
