Chichester youngsters go across country for Sussex

editorial image

Several of Chichester’s juniors have been in inter-county action for Sussex.

Some of the action has been indoors but youngsters have also been braving the cold conditions outside.

The cross-country squad travelled to Essex for the south east inter-counties race, which was a second qualifier for the England schools event later in the season.

Best placed Chichester runner at the end was Casey Keates with a fine 26th in the junior boys’ race in a field with runners from ten counties, including the usual strong teams from Essex, Surrey and Kent.

Running as a first year in the intermediate age group was Dan Eeles in 79th while Callum Adams finished 75th in the senior race – both good runs in fierce competition.

Among the girls, both Rose Ellis and Charlotte Reading (pictured above) were in form to make the top 40 in 32nd and 39th respectively and were second and third scorers for the Sussex team.

The trio of Emma Maynard in 50th, Nicola Mead 57th and Lucy Ellis 81st contested the intermediate race to good effect while the club had one runner in the senior race, Beth Garland finishing a superb 11th running for the Hampshire schools team.

Meanwhile, Chichester’s Sportshall squad were in action at Burgess Hill for their own inter-county event with the Sussex under-15 team a fine third behind Essex and Kent but beating six other counties.

This was in part down to a fine performance from Tom Ackerman, who finished as fifth best all-rounder overall including a convincing win in the four-lap event, crossing the line with a clear winning margin of over a second.

For the Sussex under-13 team, Oliver Gibson surpassed himself with a second place also in the four-lap, only beaten by the Sussex number one, while twin brother Sam was a close seventh in a tight finish in the six-lap.

The club’s third member, James Austin, was on good form in both the two-lap sprint and vertical jump while Alex Jarrold threw a personal best of 8.70m in the shot for the girls’ under-13 team.

Chichester travel to Tanbridge House School, Horsham, this Sunday for the final Sussex League fixture of the season.
