County bowlers say: Make ours a treble
All three West Sussex teams were in action in a successful weekend with the premier and B teams recording their first victories of the season and the A team capping the glory with a comfortable win.
The Premier team entertained East Sussex and were anxious to make amends for their poor result at Hailsham earlier in the season.
But they started badly, taking only two points in the first session, before getting into their stride and winning all four games in the
second session to lead 10-6 at lunch.
The improvement continued in the afternoon with five points in the third session and six in the final session for a satisfying 25-15 win.
In the fours, Lavant's John Heasman and Peter Whale won 10-6 and 8-5, while in the other four The Martlets' Kyle McGowan won 13-6 and 7-6.
In the triples, The Martlets' combination of Chris Blackman, Barrie Fitch and Marc Lancaster won 10-6 and 21-4 while club-mate Mel Lillywhite won 12-7 and lost 12-9.
The pairs saw Lavant's Ray Harding draw 13-13 in the afternoon but club-mate Peter Winter, in the singles, lost 19-10 and 18-8.
The A team also hosted East Sussex and were dominant. In the first session they won three of the four games and won all the remaining games for a 38-2 victory.
In the singles, Midhurst's Roger Brown enjoyed another successful day with 16-12 and 18-9 wins.
In the triples, the Bognor trio of Eric and Brenda Jones and Brian Mills won 12-11 and 12-5, while club-mate Rose Jalley in the other triple won 17-6 and 11-9. In the fours, Lavant's Rob Peirce won 9-8 and 11-4.
The B team visited Surrey determined to break their losing run.
With three wins in the first session and all four in the second, they held a comfortable 14-2 lead at lunch.
In the afternoon, Surrey made a comeback but two wins for West Sussex in the third session were enough to guarantee the win, and with a further two points in the final session they came away with a 26-14 victory.
In the singles, Bognor's Freddie Kaucher won 18-10 and 18-6 and in the pairs, club-mates Betty Williams and Marlene Steel won 15-10 but lost 23-8 in the afternoon.
In the triples, Lavant's John Simms and Lionel Kneale won 11-6 and 9-7 while in the other triple, Bognor's Gary Jacobs won 9-8 but lost 12-9 in the afternoon.
In the fours, Crablands' Les Dray won 10-2 and lost 11-8.
ARUN
Arun 110 Sussex IBA 113
The visit to Arun by the Sussex County Indoor Bowling Association turned out to be a very close match, the county winning by just three shots.
Arun won by two rinks and lost on four. Despite the overall three-shot win by Sussex, Arun won the top rink of the day on rink two winning by 11 shots.

Arun 152 Purley Bury 106
Another fine win for Arun came in this mixed annual friendly fixture with Purley Bury from the Croydon area.
Arun won by 46 shots, winning on four rinks and losing on two.
At the halfway stage of ten ends scores were about even, but of late Arun seem to push on in the second half and this match was no
different.
Top rink of the day was rink four who won by 18 shots.

Arun 150 Chipstead 87
The good run of form continues with this 63 shot win against the Chipstead IBC. Arun won on five rinks losing on one.
This is an annual mixed rink friendly with the return match sometime in the new year. Top rink of the day was rink two who won by 22 shots.

NYETIMBER
Nyetimber Nomads visited Horley Falcons in the first round of the county knockout cup, and came away victorious.
Shirley Syrett's team of Joan Evans, Pat Mussell and Nigel Plummer got off to a cracking start with a six on the second end and kept the lead throughout to win 23-14.
Tony Mussell's team of Barbara Crew, Catherine Plummer and Roger Knibb also held the lead throughout to win 23-8.
In the second round, Nomads will receive a visit from The Martlets, one of the strongest teams in the county.
At home to Crabland Cormorants in the league, Nyetimber Gold had the better of the match, taking four of the six points at stake.
On mat one, C Plummer, R Knibb, N Plummer and T Mussell (skip) lost 22-15, while on mat two, B Crew, G Booker, P Skinner and E Moore (skip) scored two fives on their way to a 29-15 win, having held the lead throughout.
That gave Nyetimber a 44-37 win.
There was some consolation for the visitors on the friendly mat, where they won 18-14.
LAVANT
Lavant Blue piked up four league points when they visited Midhurst Eagles.
Jim Sharrod's team of Jackie Lee, Muriel Winter and Barbara Copeland played a nip-and-tuck game until the eighth end when they were in the lead.
They did not score again until the 15th end as they went on to win 25-23.
Tony Boxall's team of Jean Conway, Clare Beardmoe and Pam Beardmore had a similar game but were one point down at the end, losing 17-16.
On the friendly mat, John Heasman's team of Pam Sharrod, Peter Lee and Bernard Wallsgrove won 28-11, which included a hot shot.
FITTLEWORTH
Fittleworth were taken to the cleaners on the fast mats at Walberton in a league match as the hosts gained revenge for the beating they had at Fittleworth.
The final score was 60-22.
Fittleworth won the friendly mat 18-16.
Scores: L White, A Jordan, S Judd, C Martin lost 33-9, J Lucking, R Lucking, B Williams, D Herbert lost 27-13, M Cook, A Hodgson, N Goodyer, G Barnfield.
Arundel lost on all three mats in their friendly at Fittleworth, the home side winning 65-36.

THE MARTLETS
Jack Rollings represented his club at the national under-18s singles qualifying competition held at the county's home venue, Westergate.
The 12-year-old son of former English national triples champion, Malcolm Rollings, brought some awesome form to the round-robin competition that saw him rack up scores of 24-0,14-3,11-5 and 14-5 before he drew 10-10 with Southwater's England junior Jessica Hoole in the final game decider.
Jack's plus-50 shot difference earned him a place at the national finals in April.
