Ex-Southampton stars help Avisford celebrate past and future

A team of forner Southampton pros are heading to Pagham to play a match in aid of Avisford Youth FC.

Avisford, open to six to 16-year-olds, are a local community club based in Rose Green and Aldwick. Founded in 1991, they have been trying to

rebuild in recent years after a quiet period.

The match at Nyetimber Lane, Pagham, will pit Avisford's veterans against the ex-Southampton players and will be a celebration of the past and, they hope, of new beginnings.

Avisford's Steve Kill said: "As a lifelong Saints fan I contacted Tim Manns, who helps with the ex-Saints, and he put me in contact with Leroy Whale, who organises the fixtures for the team.

"After discussions we agreed to the match being played on Sunday, May 23. A big thanks also goes to Pagham FC, who are helping us put on the day by lending us their ground, the facilities and the kit.

"We are raising money for the club to help with the purchase of equipment and well needed kits, while splitting the proceeds with ex-Saints, who help with good causes and to help players who have fallen on harder times."

Former Southampton, Liverpool and Wales keeper Paul Jones, who lives locally, is set to play and a number of other big names could appear.

The Southampton line-up varies but the squad includes Tommy Widdrington, Ian Baird, Nicky Banger, Rod Wallace, Graham Baker, David Howells, Francis Benali, Glen Cockerill, Claus Lundekvam, Jason Dodd, Jo Tessem and Ruben Agboola.

Other names who sometimes play include ex-Hants wicketkeeper Adi Aymes and former Pompey striker Paul Walsh.

Kick-off is 2pm and tickets are 3 for adults, 1 for children, with under-fives free.
