Although we’re in the fourth month of the year, we’ve still had only three race meetings at Fontwell so far this year, writes Fontwell Park marketing manager George Hill.
But after a weather-hit opening to 2014, we’re aiming to make up for lost time in the next few weeks, with four top-notch fixtures to come between now and the end of May.
A busy period kicks off today (Friday 11) with our Easter egg hunt raceday.
We have seven races, the first of which is at 1.50pm, and ahead of Thursday morning’s final declarations, we were delighted to have a whopping 157 entries across the card.
With so many entries, we’re confident of good-sized fields throughout the afternoon, right through to the bumper at 5.05.
Irish trainer Paul Flynn, who’s not a regular with us, is sending some runners to us and all the leading handlers have entries, including local operators like Gary Moore, Chris Gordon and Nick Gifford.
Observer sports editor Steve Bone’s tips for today: 1.20 Generous Helpings, 1.50 Oliver’s Hill, 2.20 Seebright, 2.50 Leader of the Gang, 3.25 Domtaline, 4.00 Sylvan Legend, 4.35 Pod, 5.05 Max The Minister.
After the third race, there’ll be a presentation to Tom Cannon, who was Fontwell’s leading jockey in 2013.
The jockeys’ prize is sponsored by Craig Roberts who runs the Chanccellor of the Formchecker and is a big supporter of the racecourse.
As we’re into the school Easter holidays, we’ll have lots of entertainment for young race-goers.
There’ll be an Easter egg hunt before racing with lots of chocolate prizes up for grabs. To take part, children need to come to the racecourse office to register.
We’ll also have a bouncy castle, face painters and a couple of fun-fair rides. The Easter Bunny will be here too and children can get a free goody bag by registering for our Young Hooves racing club.
Our next race meeting after tomorrow’s is our first evening fixture of the year on Friday, May 2, which could give people the perfect start to the bank holiday weekend.
We hold a Hunter Chase meeting for the second year on Thursday, May 15, and then it’s our big family race day on May 25 – the Sunday of the bank holiday weekend.
