Late drama suits Selsey but leaves Chichester beaten again
A LATE penalty gave Selsey a dramatic 3-2 victory over Chichester City at Oaklands Park in division one of the Sussex League.
The relegation-doomed hosts included Chamal Fenelon in their line-up after signing him from Peacehaven.
The much-travelled striker’s goals helped City avoid the drop back in 2007-08 but it remains to be seen if history can repeat itself this season.
Chichester took the lead on nine minutes with Joe Briggs surging into the rea and picking out the unmarked Gary Buller, who slid the ball home.
On a bog-like pitch, Rob Wimble banged a shot against the woodwork for Selsey on 16 minutes.
It was until the 58th minute that the Blues managed to pull level. Ex-City player Luke Killner sent a ball in from the right and Mark Lee forced it in from close range through a crowd of bodies.
But two minutes later Chichester regained the advantage, with Fenelon expertly drilling in a long shot that crept just inside the post out of Sam Joyce’s reach.
Unfortunately for Chichester, winning matches isn’t a habit they’re familiar with at the moment and Selsey’s relentless pressure during the closing stages brought two goals to clinch success.
The Blues had strong appeals for a penalty denied when Jake Lafferty appeared to be brought down.
With seven minutes remaining the impressive Killner grabbed a deserved equaliser, although his celebrations in front of Chichester’s dugout led to Ben Vassallo kicking a ball at him.
The City sub received a red card for his antics, despite the fact he wasn’t even playing.
Then finally in the 86th minute, a Jack James foul led to a Selsey spot-kick which Wimble readily converted to give his side the lead for the first time throughout the match.

Chichester are without a match this Saturday as scheduled opponents Three Bridges are involved in an FA Vase replay. Selsey visit Sidley aiming to improve their current position in mid-table.
