Despite the conditions, Haywards Heath were able to prepare their pitch to a playable condition - and Midhurst appreciated the opportunity to bid for points from a team who were fifth in the Sussex League division two table table, even if the hosts did run out 4-2 winners.

Midhurst started with several new faces as they have done several times recently and the small band of supporters were satisfied with the effort put in. However, the home team went ahead when Mike Williamson took a well-laid pass from Rick Peacock and Haywards Heath were in the driving seat after just nine minutes.

The short passing game, which seems to be the style Midhurst now adopt, works well at times and within a minute leading scorer Luke Sheldrick took a pass from Lawrence Hyde and Midhurst were level.

There were several heavy areas on the pitch and the home side seemed to cope with these better than Midhurst.

With half-time fast approaching, the home side went ahead when Peacock netted from close range.

Midhurst did not let this setback unduly affect them and in a series of corners, more accuracy in front of goal would have levelled the score.

The game slipped from Midhurst’s grasp when two quick goals by the home side brought the score to 4-1.

A late rally produced a goal by Hyde and lifted Midhurst’s spirits slightly.

This result puts pressure on the team to collect a win against Steyning, who Midhurst visit this week.

MIDHURST: Knight, Castleton, Renshaw, A Newton, G Newton, Hyde, Turner, Hill, Sheldrick, Peck, White. Subs: Pelling, Joyce.

The reserves are due to entertain Wick and Barnham this week.
