Pagham almost saw off Crowborough in Sussex League division one – although the game could just have easily have resulted in a win for the away side.

With the 6-1 drubbing of Uckfield fresh in their minds, the same starting XI flew at the visitors. James Temple could have had the opener in the first minute but the ball was scrambled away, then a Lions free-kick saw a chance headed just wide.

Crows keeper Ben Head had to be on his toes as Temple was through.

Crowborough threatened with a couple of free-kicks and a corner.

Lewis Hyde had a storming game and his runs down the right caused Crowborough problems. Hyde could have had a goal himself on 25 minutes, but his shot found the side netting.

The first booking went to Crows’ Paul Butler, closely followed by Howard Neighbour for the Lions following a foul on Tom Boddy.

The best chance of the half fell to Hyde, who hit the bar on 38 minutes. Temple headed wide with a minute of normal time left, while the half ended with Sam Phillips heading the ball at James Binfield.

A minute into the second half, Hyde tried his luck but his shot was stopped by Head. Binfield saved well from Alex Rich.

The first goal, when it came, was a great strike. A Pagham free-kick saw the ball threaded to Neighbour, who struck the ball hard back past a despairing Head.

Ben Buckland will rue his chance on the hour when his solo run ended with him hitting the ball high and wide.

Crowborough’s equaliser came from Alex Rich, who volleyed past Binfield with just under half an hour left.

Kevin Everest’s huge clearance on 70 minutes denied Temple another chance.

With Scott Murfin coming on to replace Neighbour, the Lions set about trying to get a winner. A goalmouth scramble at the Crowborough end almost saw them get it.
