Selsey have been named Sussex FA charter standard community club of the year in the FA Community Awards.
David Lee and Gordon Weller were presented with the award on behalf of Selsey by FA council member Tony Kybett, at an awards evening at county FA HQ in Lancing.
Selsey have worked tirelessly with Selsey Seals to move football participation in the area to a new level. They have 19 adult and youth teams covering all age ranges and encompass a welcome and friendly attitude to the delivery of grass-roots football.
The club are committed to the development of young people and have a five-year plan which improves the standard of coaching delivered across the teams.
A number of volunteer coaches throughout both clubs already hold the FA level two and level one coaching qualifications.
Selsey are a leading club within Sussex supporting and promoting the younger coaches through the FA Football Futures programme.
The club also take responsibility in encouraging those who want to pursue a career in refereeing by actively encouraging younger members to enrol on courses.
They have a dedicated team of volunteers who help provide football opportunities to all in the community at a very low cost and without these people’s commitment and hard work, Selsey FC would not be able to operate. The club have provided an outstanding contribution to grass-roots football in the area.
They were crowned winners by a panel of Sussex FA representatives following a seven-week public nomination period.
Keveena Mosen, Sussex FA football development officer, said: “The grass-roots awards are a chance for us to recognise those volunteers, coaches and clubs who sacrifice so much throughout the year and say thank you to them.
“Without them we wouldn’t have safe and structured environments where youngsters can develop their footballing talent. We are delighted that the FA and award sponsors McDonald’s have provided us the opportunity to recognise them through the FA Community Awards and we wish them all the best.”
