Sids win 12-0 but opponents win praise ... Bosham cup defence ends

Ferring, rooted to the foot of the table, were a credit to their football club. They battled for every ball and never gave up even when things went against them, as when they lost the captain to injury early in the game.

Sidlesham looked assured and positive in possession and played some good football with Dale Hayes scoring first to set the ball rolling early on.

Next John Phillips got on the scoresheet, followed by Callum Dowdell and Tom Bayley. Dan Bassil also got in on the act in the first half.

Ferring would perhaps have conceded more but for their goalkeeper’s efforts and wayward shooting at times from some of the Sids players.

The Ferring keeper was superb in the first half and produced a couple of outstanding stops to keep the score down.

The second half started as the first half ended, Sidlesham attacking at will with the Ferring defence and goalkeeper working overtime to contain them.

Dowdell and Bayley each scored their second and Bassil got his, all with good finishes after great build-up play.

Bayley and Bassil grabbed their hat-tricks with cool finishes after going through one on one before 16-year-old Callum Litterick got his first of the game with a good strike from 18 yards.

MoM Phillips rounded off the scoring with a smart finish.

The three points leave Daren Pearce’s team in second place and hot on the heels of league leaders Bosham.

Sidlesham are away to Lancing United this Saturday (2pm) in the league.

SCFL Division Two Cup QF

Bosham’s long grip on the Division Two Cup came to a heartbreaking end as Jarvis Brook grabbed a late winner to knock the holders out.

Callum Fewell deputised in goal for unavailable Kieran Magee and Nick Edgington came in for Pat Bulbeck with Charlie Cooper filing in for injured player manager Andy Probee.

Bosham, winners of the cup in 2015 as well as last season, started brightly but were caught out early as the visitors took the lead after only five minutes. The Blues forced a corner and Luke Leppard evaded tackles as he moved along the edge of the area before picking his spot with a well-timed effort.

Bosham showed good intentions but their efforts failed to bear fruit in the final third.

Close to the half-hour the Reds drew level. Good work from James Wilson and Marco Giambelardini enabled Jake Lafferty to surge down the right and into the area. His shot was only partially saved by keeper Rob Gordon and Alex Barnes popped up to drive the ball home.

The joy was shortlived – minutes later Jarvis Brook had recaptured the lead as the dangerous Leppard dispossessed Fewell and slotted into the empty net.

Bosham almost got straight back on level terms as Barnes got through on goal only to hit the post with Gordon well beaten. Brook were awarded a penalty when Nathan Milroy was adjudged to have been fouled in the box by Coope but Daryl King ballooned his spot-kick over the bar.

On the hour, Jarvis Brook broke quickly and bore down on the area. The Robins cleared but Kind unleashed a sensational drive to the top corner from 30 yards to spark wild celebrations.

Bosham had a mountain to climb but with Max Kinahan and Neil Redman coming off the bench, Kinahan struck in the 84th minute, heading home a Graeme Dowden corner.

A minute later, the Blues panicked and Giambelardini took advantage to lob the keeper and make it 3-3.

But joy turned to heartache when, in the last minute, Millroy pounced for the visitors to snatch a last-gasp winner and put Jarvis Brook through to a semi-final against Sidlesham.

Bosham can be proud of their achievements as back-to-back cup winners and now attentions will turn to whether they can clinch the division-two title.
