Bognor marched on at the top of the Ryman premier thanks to second-half goals by Chad Field and James Crane that earned a 2-0 win at Wingate and Finchley.

Another defeat for second-placed Needham Market boosted the Rocks’ lead at the top although Havant moved into seccond place by beating Hendon to remain four points behind Jamie Howell’s team with two games in hand.

The victory over Wingate, themselves well-placed for a play-off push, sets the Rocks up for Tuesday’s Sussex Senior Cup semi-final with Crawley Town at Sussex FA HQ at Lancing.

Field’s tap-in gave Bognor the lead just before the hour and Crane scored for the second game in a row to make the points safe, heading in a Dylan Barnett corner with four minutes left.

Charlie Moone couldn’t find a goal on the Bognor debut but it didn’t matter as Howell’s men - who visit Needham Market next Saturday - got the job done.

In the Southern Combination premier division, Chichester City’s long unbeaten run continued with a 3-0 success at Wick which left them still third and just two points behind leaders Shoreham.

Field’s tap-in gave Bognor the lead just before the hour and Crane scored for the second game in a row to make the points safe, heading in a Dylan Barnett corner with four minutes left.

Scott Jones, Jack Lee and Rocks dual-registered midfielder Lorenzo Dolcetti scored the goals.

Pagham suffered their second home defeat in a week, with Joe Shelley’s second-half goal not enough to prevent a 2-1 defeat to Arundel, who had Asa Nicholson and Harry Russell to thank for the goals that secured the points.

In the division-one derby at the High Street Ground, two goals by England Colleges star Joe Clarke helped Selsey see off Midhurst 3-1.

Tom Groom was also on target for Steve Bailey’s team while Lewis Hamilton scored the Stags’ goal.

In division two Sidlesham put 12 past whipping boys Ferring - Dale Hayes, John Phillips (2), Dan Bassil (3), Callum Dowdell (2), Tom Bayley (3) and Callum Litterick all got their names on the scoresheet to put Daren Pearce’s side just six points behind leaders Bosham.

The Robins suffered more cup heartache, missing out on the chance to defend their Division 2 Cup crown when they went down 4-3 at home to Jarvis Brook in the last eight. Alex Barnes, Max Kinahan and Marco Giambelardini got their goals.

In the West Sussex League, Nyetimber Pirates are 14 points clear in the premier division after thrashing Henfield 7-0. Lavant beat Predators 2-0 and sit second.

On the local rugby scene, Chichester started superbly against National three London south east leaders Tonbridge but ended up losing 47-17, while Bognor battled well in their London three south west home clash with Basingstoke but lost 25-17.
