Birch: Guy’s the man to lead Pompey for time being

Pompey administrator Trevor Birch

Pompey administrator Trevor Birch

Trevor Birch has confirmed he expects Guy Whittingham to stay in charge as manager until Pompey are out of administration.

The Pompey Supporters’ Trust yesterday signed a conditional agreement with PKF to allow them to take over as the Blues’ new owners.

Now they must take on rival bidders Portpin in court to release the charge they hold over Fratton Park.

If that is successful, Pompey can obtain the ‘golden share’ off the Football League and come out of administration.

The likelihood is that would not be until the end of December at the very earliest.

And despite receiving interest in the vacant job from other potential managers, Birch believes Whittingham will stay in charge for a while yet.

He said: ‘For the time being we are staying with Guy, supported by Andy (Awford), and that will be the situation probably until the Trust take over.

‘There have been quite a few approaches from others. People are interested because it’s a great club.

‘But the intention at the moment with me is for Guy to remain in charge, in consultation with the Trust.

‘It’s a strange period. Although I am still administrator there is a conditional sale in place so, obviously, I will be liaising with the Trust in a difficult situation.

‘I have not discussed the management situation with them, I have been just concentrating on getting this deal over the line.

‘Guy has done it before, he’s a safe pair of hands and at this stage we have to look internally.

‘I don’t know how long this process is going to take, but for the time being we are staying as we are.’
