Jon Harley pledged his Pompey future and insisted: I won’t be joining any January exodus.
The Blues are bracing themselves for a number of departures next month when the transfer window opens.
With players out-of-contract, the possibility is the better performers could be tempted away.
Gabor Gyepes has already admitted he may move if he cannot get the security of a long-term contract which would allow him to bring his family over from Hungary.
Meanwhile, 11-goal Izale McLeod has been linked with Swindon and will undoubtedly attract interest.
It has emerged this weekend both Jack Compton and Josh Thompson are to join Colchester.
And Luke Rodgers is to make his loan switch to Shrewsbury permanent.
Harley, who is one of eight players whose contract expires on January 16, is desperate to stay, however.
The 33-year-old’s family live in Liverpool and have recently moved house there.
But providing he is offered a new deal he will be delighted to remain at Fratton Park.
He said: ‘The way I look at it, it’s a short career.
‘It’s great if you could have something long-term and move the family down but with month-to-month deals you cannot do that.
‘However, I do get back to see my family.
‘When I retire – although I plan to carry on for a while yet – I will have plenty of time to spend with them.
‘Of course it is not perfect but you get by and I am enjoying myself here.
‘There is more than enough to keep me busy when I am down on my own.
‘From my point of view I am settled down in Portsmouth, it’s a fantastic club and I want to be part of it going forwards, getting it back on its feet again.
‘My kids are in school and settled, so it is a big decision to move them.
‘In an ideal world everyone would move here but I get back when I can and they come down.
‘I have family in south London and Kent, so I am not stuck here on my own. I fully understand where Gabor is coming from but it is a completely different situation for me – he does not get to see his family at all.
‘I don’t know what the management are thinking and if they are looking at getting someone else in – but if I’m offered another contract, I will sign it.’
Harley has made 24 appearances for the Blues so far, establishing himself as a regular.
He has been staying at Champneys in Liphook during that time.
The former Chelsea full-back has also been helping out behind the scenes on the coaching side at Fratton Park.
And it’s a responsibility he has revelled in.
He added: ‘It was Guy who first asked me to get involved and I thank him for that.
‘So I’ve been helping out coach the under-15s and under-16s here and there.
‘I’ve got my UEFA B licence, so it’s a case of keeping my hours up.
‘I definitely would like to be involved on the coaching side when I do retire from football.’
