Pompey have been handed a boost ahead of the trip to Peterborough.

The Blues are set to welcome Aaron Mokoena back to training as Michael Appleton’s options are given a timely lift.

Meanwhile, Luke Varney is making good progress from the knee injury which has kept him out for six weeks.

The clash with the Posh is expected to arrive too soon for the striker, though.

Varney and David Norris are likely to be the only players unavailable for Saturday’s trip to London Road.

Norris is recovering from a double hernia operation, which he underwent after picking up a three-match ban for his red card against West Ham.

Defender Tal Ben Haim is the only new worry from the weekend’s clash with Cardiff.

He is being treated for a groin injury which isn’t expected to keep him sidelined.

Mokoena is making decent progress from the hamstring strain which kept him out of the defeat in Wales.

He is in contention to return to training towards the end of this week.

With Appleton having just 13 fully-fit senior players on Saturday, he desperately needed some positive news.

That appears to be the case with those problems beginning to clear.

Pompey physio Steve Allen said: ‘Things aren’t looking too bad.

‘Luke has progressed well and has been doing more running.

‘We will increase his activity on Thursday.

‘David had his double hernia op last Thursday.

‘That was something we thought could be done with his suspension.

‘Tal has a groin problem but it shouldn’t be a problem for the weekend and Aaron should train on Thursday or Friday.’
