Pompey no closer to striking deal

Svetoslav Todorov

Svetoslav Todorov

Guy Whittingham has admitted his interest in Svetoslav Todorov.

But the Pompey caretaker boss feels a deal for the Pompey hero is still a some way off.

The Fratton faithful sang Todorov’s name during Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Hartlepool.

Chants of ‘Toddy’s coming home’ were also heard throughout the game as fans made their feelings known about the prospects of a return for the 34-year-old.

Of Saturday’s starting XI, only Gabor Gyepes had scored previously for Pompey before Jed Wallace bagged his second-half strike.

Whittingham’s side have scored just three goals in their past six games.

The caretaker boss knows Todorov could help that issue.

He said: ‘There’s nothing that’s progressed (with a deal for Todorov).

‘The agent has spoken about it.

‘There’s been contact but I don’t know how close or far away it is. It’s probably not that far along.

‘Am I interested? Listen, he’s a goalscorer and we aren’t scoring.’

Goals may be hard to come by but Pompey’s defensive deficiencies were most alarming on Saturday.

Poor marking and poor judgement were behind the goals.

Whittingham said: ‘I don’t know where we were getting our defending from for that second goal.

‘We’ve never tried to play offside here, so you could say that was disappointing.

‘It was just too easy for them to score.

‘The formation was fine and we did play okay but we’re conceding poor goals.

‘That has nothing to do with systems.’
