Agyemang revelling in Pompey confidence boost

Rejuvenated Patrick Agyemang has thanked Pompey for instilling the confidence in him to be a striking success.

And he has announced his intention to remain at Fratton Park until the end of the season, at the very least.

The 32-year-old capped a magnificent performance against Crewe on Saturday with his maiden Blues goal.

Agyemang also set up David Connolly in the 2-1 Alexandra Stadium success – Pompey’s first win since October.

After finding himself out of the picture at Stevenage, the powerful forward is revelling in regular football once again.

His Pompey loan spell will this week be extended for a second month.

And Agyemang believes Guy Whittingham has helped reignite his game.

He said: ‘I am a confidence player and also my biggest critic.

‘I am always trying to fight against myself, which I shouldn’t do, although here I am dealing with it and getting more confident after every game.

‘Some players are confident the whole time, some are not as confident and have to have an arm around their shoulder.

‘I am one of those who would like to be a lot more stronger mentally.

‘I am 32 but still working on it. Sometimes with me I feel I’ve let myself down and sometimes it’s hard to get that form back up.

‘But you have to work hard on the training field and keep going in the games and, sooner or later, it will come.

‘Before I was having a lot of injuries so I was thinking “I don’t want to get injured this game”. Sometimes I fear I might pull a hamstring or thigh.

‘It has been like that through my career but now I am starting to work through all that and not thinking about injuries.

‘I’m just thinking about playing and scoring now, which is helping.

‘I am playing regularly here at the moment and feeling good. I have a good team around me and it’s easy coming in.’

Agyemang’s goal at Crewe was only his second since the end of October 2010. Nonetheless, he was part of QPR’s side promoted to the Premier League that season.

He has since spent time on loan at Millwall and Stevenage before joining The Boro permanently last summer.

After falling out of favour at the Lamex Stadium, though, Agyemang moved to Pompey on an initial month’s loan in February.

And extending that stay is currently being finalised

He added: ‘My loan is up this week. Extending it has been agreed but there is nothing put down yet.

‘Stevenage have not asked me to go back yet, although they have lost a couple of games in a row. I don’t know what they are going to do.

‘I am out of contract with Stevenage at the end of the season and just want to play games, really.

‘I am happy here and will keep trying to get some goals.’
