Paul Cook has backed Christian Burgess to become a better player at Fratton Park.

The 23-year-old was bought from League One Peterborough this summer after being made available for transfer.

What we all have is deficiencies. Most importantly we appreciate what we are good at, but also appreciate what we are not so good at

Posh’s interest in cashing in on the central defender emerged after only a season at London Road.

Yet Cook has recognised the promise in Burgess, who is currently entering his third full season.

The former Hartlepool loanee caught the eye in last weekend’s opener at the Hawks with his composure and willingness to bring to the ball out of defence to instigate attacks.

At one point during his first-half appearance, Burgess dribbled into the hosts’ penalty area before shooting.

And Cook believes he and his staff can build on the defender’s talent to improve his game further.

He said: ‘With Christian you can see the natural qualities in him.

‘He can bring the ball out of defence, he can pass it, he has time in possession, but he can also defend.

‘What we have got to make sure is we are working on other deficiencies within his game.

‘What we all have is deficiencies. Most importantly we appreciate what we are good at, but also appreciate what we are not so good at.

‘And if we keep working hard at the things we are not good at we will be an all-round better player.’

Burgess made 33 appearances and scored four goals for the Posh following his arrival in the summer of 2014 from Middlesbrough for an undisclosed fee.

He previously enjoyed a loan spell at Hartlepool in the 2013-14 campaign, making 46 appearances, two of which came against Pompey.
