Outspoken Bournemouth chairman Eddie Mitchell has refused to be drawn on rumours of discussions over a merger between Pompey and the Cherries.

The Cherries chief rebuffed Pompey’s former owners CSI to invest in the Dorset-based club before they took charge at Fratton Park.

But plans to merge the two clubs were allegedly mooted back in February.

While Mitchell would not go into specifics on any proposals, he believes that mergers could become commonplace.

Mitchell told the Bournemouth Echo: ‘Eventually, I think it is the way football will go. In years to come, to stay afloat and to compete, smaller clubs will combine. Clubs with 30 or 40 miles between them are not that distant.’

Pompey host Bournemouth on the opening day of the new League One season and Mitchell has experience of points deductions and Football League punishments.

He said: ‘I feel for their supporters but, hopefully, in the long run, it will help unite the club. We were subjected to various sanctions and I think that galvanised us.

‘Portsmouth have got a fantastic platform to work from with their supporter base. If there was any help we could offer them, we would.’
