Pompey are closing in on signing Ben Davies.
But Paul Cook has admitted he still wants a right-back as the clock ticks down on the August 8 kick-off.
We are still looking for one of two in other areas as well and it’s nice to be in a position that if those players came along we can sign themPaul Cook
Davies has spent the past month trialling with the Blues following his release from Sheffield United.
During Pompey’s pre-season schedule, the 34-year-old has regularly been filling in at right-back, most recently at Gillingham on Saturday.
However, Cook sees Davies more as a versatile option who can cover a string of different positions, including left-back and the right-hand side of midfield.
And while the ex-Derby man has impressed, the hunt remains in progress for a right-back.
Cook said: ‘I’m still chatting with Ben about a deal.
‘He’s a great lad, a really good model pro, the type of pro you want at the club, and we are probably still looking for a right-back if the truth be known.
‘We are still looking for one of two in other areas as well and it’s nice to be in a position that if those players came along we can sign them.
‘We will keep going, there are still going to be changeovers at this club, such as Paul Robinson leaving.
‘There is always going to be change, ins and outs, so we’ll just keep working on it.’
Davies has featured in five of Pompey’s pre-season friendlies, each appearance coming at right-back.
At Gillingham he turned in arguably his finest performance so far for the club, also striking the crossbar with a first-half free-kick.
Yet Davies has played most of his career as a midfielder, chalking up a total of 86 goals during spells with the likes of Kidderminster, Chester, Shrewsbury, Notts County, Derby and the Blades.
