David Flitcroft felt his Bury team delivered the best display of the season as they cruised past Pompey.
The Gigg Lane boss saw his side storm to a convincing 3-0 success and few could argue that the Shakers did not deserve the victory as they dominated the game from start to finish.
Flitcroft said: ‘Portsmouth are a team that should be up there but they came up against a real force.
‘The game had everything that we planned for and prepared for.
‘There was penetration and a real desire about our play.
‘I’m delighted for the lads and I thought they were absolutely outstanding.
‘It’s probably the best we’ve played this season.
‘They should be proud of their performance.
‘It was a scintillating performance but a powerful, pressing, physical one as well.
‘The boys put an unbelievable shift in.’
While Andy Awford tried to change things at half-time with his side 2-0 down, in fairness, Bury coped with it with minimal trouble.
Flitcroft added: ‘We knew Portsmouth switched to a diamond at times and we executed our game plan with brilliance, with power and pace.
‘It was really destructive and the goals were exquisite. Individually and collectively, each one was brilliant.
‘They were quality goals but they were all very different.
‘Nicky Adams’ ball for Ryan Lowe’s goal was on a plate, he showed great athleticism to get the ball over.
‘And Danny Mayor’s goal represented the new Danny Mayor. I want him to be productive, he’s very hard to pick up and he’s threatened so many times coming in on the inside.
‘At times he’s unstoppable, he’s a match-winner.
But we know there’s goals in our team, it was the clean sheet that really pleased me.
‘We worked hard for it and we never switched off. That really pleased me.
