Pompey have appointed Darren Simmons to their new-look set-up.

The 34-year-old has been made football operations/player recruitment consultant and will work closely with Guy Whittingham.

Simmons has spent the past three months helping the Blues boss and Steve Allen on player recruitment on a voluntary basis

Now his role has been recognised officially by the club, although he will remain unpaid.

Simmons, from Portchester, runs Lakeside-business Football Executives, providing staff and business advice to football clubs on organisation structure, commercial activity and scouting networks.

And chief executive Mark Catlin revealed Pompey were delighted to continue the partnership.

He said: ‘Darren has been helping for a number of months behind the scenes and been another sounding board for Guy’s backroom team.

‘He has contacts at multiple clubs and highlighted to Guy players who might be available, as well as giving information that has been valuable in bringing in new players.

‘Darren’s background is football operations and has been advising us on staff on-and-off the field.

‘What’s more, he has been helping out voluntarily.

‘We feel he should get recognition for what he has done and will continue to help us in an official title.

‘I just want to stress that it is in a voluntary capacity – it is unpaid – helping us through his contacts at various football clubs.

‘He is also a friend of the club and somebody from the local community, which fits into our remit.

‘He’s among quite a lot of other people who have also been helping us behind the scenes on-and-off the pitch.’
