Toumani Diagouraga shrugged off suggestions he made a terrible mistake in joining Pompey.
The 26-year-old midfielder turned down offers from League One clubs to link up with Richie Barker for a month, after leaving Brentford in search of regular first-team football.
But after finding himself in a team that was trailing 3-0 at half-time on his debut – against Scunthorpe – Diagouraga could have been forgiven for making a swift call to his agent.
He said: ‘That game at Scunthorpe and the first half was pretty tough – it wasn’t quite what I expected! But that’s football sometimes. They are at the top of the league for a reason.
‘I never thought I’d made a mistake in coming to Portsmouth.
‘Games happen like that sometimes when you come up against good teams.
‘No matter who you play for, you might have a bad day at the office. But you have to move on.
‘It happens to every team at some point. The important thing is that you bounce back – and we certainly did that against Accrington.
‘Obviously, the first game didn’t really go according to plan, but we bounced back well.’
Diagouraga believes it helped Pompey that they faced another game so quickly and were not in a position to dwell on the result for too long.
‘It was definitely a good thing that we had a game straight away after the Scunthorpe match,’ he said.
‘We didn’t have time to think about it too much.
‘So we just put it to the back of our heads and we knew we had to come out and put on a good performance.’
While the on-loan midfielder thinks it will take some time to adjust to his new surroundings, he is certain he can prosper at a different level of football.
‘The level is alright. I had a chat with the manager at Brentford before I came and he told me that the level is quite good,’ said Diagouraga.
‘The first two games I’ve played, I’ve found the level quite good.
‘I don’t see that being too much of a problem.’
