BONDZ N’GALA acknowledged the ‘critical’ nature of the York showdown and vowed: We owe them one.

The defender is gunning to put right the nightmare at Bootham Crescent tomorrow.

Pompey face the in-form Minstermen after falling to a horror 4-2 defeat last September.

That scoreline was kind on the Blues as they served up a mistake-laden display riddled with gaffes.

The performance ranks right up there with the worst of a campaign which has had a number of lows.

N’Gala was part of the Pompey side that afternoon and is still haunted by what happened.

Eight of the starting XI back then are in contention to feature in the return fixture at Fratton Park tomorrow.

York go into the game in flying form after winning their past four games on the bounce.

Nigel Worthington’s men are unbeaten in the past eight and have delivered form which has propelled them into the play-off picture.

But N’Gala admitted the memory of that day will provide an extra motivation for his team tomorrow.

‘We owe York one after the away game at their place,’ he said.

‘We have to show them what we are made of at Fratton Park.

‘It was a low point of the season but after that we had a transformation.

‘The performances went up and we started doing better.

‘You have to think about that game and we will remember it when we play against them on Saturday.

‘We definitely owe them one.’

Pompey aren’t exactly short of reasons to deliver when they tackle a side who have flown up the League Two table in recent weeks.

Richie Barker’s men saw defeat at Fleetwood last Saturday pull them back into the relegation dogfight.

They go into the game four points and two places off the drop zone in 21st place.

And results are needed quickly if it is not going to become a nail-biting fight for their place in the Football League over the final nine games.

N’Gala acknowledged his team are now coming into a make-or-break period.

The 24-year-old knows Pompey have to remedy their nightmare form at Fratton Park this season to do that.

There has been progress on that front of late as they go into the clash unbeaten in four on their own patch.

But with the past two home games being 0-0 stalemates, N’Gala realises they have to be quickly converted into maximums.

He added: ‘It’s a critical time now. We have to put a run of wins together and we have to do it now.

‘We need to get higher up the league and the sooner we get up the league the better.

‘We’re professional footballers and we have to deal with pressure at home. We have to perform.

‘It’s that time now when he know we have to deliver. There’s no excuses now.

‘We have to give the fans something to smile about at Fratton Park.

‘We have to make sure we are at it from the start and go out and put in a performance.’
