Joe Devera has been praised for his selfless attitude.
The former Swindon defender filled in at left-back for Pompey in their 1-1 draw at Plymouth – after impressing at right-back in the win over Rochdale the previous league game.
While his preferred position is in central defence, Blues boss Guy Whittingham singled him out for a special mention after doing a sound job once again in the absence of injured duo Marcos Painter and Danny East.
Whittingham said: ‘I think Joe did a cracking job for us at left-back against Plymouth.
‘Everyone knows he would rather play at centre-back, but I’ve asked him to play at right-back and left-back now and he hasn’t let anyone down.
‘He deserved great credit for that but he is one of those guys who wants to play and doesn’t mind if he is asked to do a job somewhere else.
‘Those types of player are very important in your squad.
‘They don’t moan and groan – they just get on with it.’
While Shaun Cooper was an option for Whittingham after replacing Painter in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy win at Oxford last week, the reliable 26-year-old got the nod at Home Park.
And although the ex-Barnet man was perhaps not quite as comfortable on his weaker side, he remains an option to retain his place this weekend against Bury.
Whittingham added: ‘Joe has got that bit of extra experience and it’s vital.
‘He is just a calming influence back there.
‘We can’t seem to have a settled back four at the moment and that hasn’t helped anyone.
‘We will see how the injuries are and how everyone comes through training this week, but I would have no issues using him there again.’
