Ryan Taylor toasted his match-winning spot-kick and revealed: It was my first senior penalty.
The 25-year-old kept his cool to slot home the winner in last night’s 1-0 triumph at Wycombe Wanderers.
Taylor was not named beforehand as the man to take the penalties.
He could not even point to a successful history from 12 yards as the reason to shoulder the responsibility.
Instead, he just grabbed the ball first.
Taylor said: ‘I have not taken a senior penalty before so I was a bit nervous but I slotted it away.
‘I saw the keeper move early so he made my mind up for me.
‘I took one in a reserve game earlier this season and scored.
‘But I was adamant I was having it. I wanted to get on the scoresheet.
‘Nobody was down to take them but I think Jake wanted it and I thought he was going to grab it from me but he didn’t.
‘Luckily, we didn’t get into a fight over it.
‘It’s usually David Connolly but I was first to grab it.
‘And I hope I’m staying on the penalties now.
‘I’ve taken one and scored one, so I want the job full-time.’
Taylor also revealed seeing out a gritty win has given the team a huge lift.
He said: ‘It’s a great feeling to get that win – we needed it.
‘It’s certainly given us a confidence boost.
‘If we can get a run going, we can start looking up the table rather than over our shoulders.
‘But I think we deserved the win – everyone worked their socks off.’
