Taylor vindicates Awford selection

Ryan Taylor grabbed two goals in three minutes to lead Pompey to a stunning late victory over Tranmere Rovers.

And for Andy Awford the striker continues to fully vindicate his team selection.

Taylor has often been criticised by the Fratton faithful for not scoring enough goals to accompany his impressive work-rate.

A double in last night’s remarkable 3-2 success over Micky Adams’ side has now taken his tally for the campaign to six.

For his Pompey manager, though, the ex-Rotherham man keeps on producing the goods.

Awford said: ‘Ryan deserved his goals last night. They are not 25-yard screamers in the top corner but are vitally as important.

‘I am delighted for him because he is so important to us. Ever since I took over as manager last season and into this season I think he has been excellent.

‘Football is about opinions and I have always said that.

‘I was at a forum last week and somebody asked me the question why I played Ryan Taylor?

‘I said that’s my job, I have to pick players.

‘Dunne or Ertl, Butler or Shorey, Taylor or Westcarr, Jones or Poke, Robinson or Devera, whatever – that is the job and you are never going to please everyone.

‘I think Ryan is an excellent player and very important to us.

‘I don’t know why people forget (his contribution last season), I don’t. He is very important to us.

‘We know what his strengths are, we play to his strengths, and very rarely does he let me down.’
