On the road is the place to be with Pompey this season.
The Blues’ league record on their travels, of course, is unsurpassed in English football this season.
Let the debate rage
In homage to their form away from Fratton Park, I’ve assembled a list of my top 10 away days following the star and crescent.
It’s a subjective line-up and I’m sure the likes of Northampton (80), Liverpool (80 and 92) and Bradford (96) will rank high for many of you.
So let the debate rage and feel free to let me know your halcyon away trips at @pn_jordan_cross
1. Vitoria Guimaraes 2 Pompey 2
October 2, 2008
The away day to end all away days.
Over 1,000 jubilant fans take over Praca de Santiago in the historical capital of Portugal. A celebration of all that had taken place at Pompey with darker times around the corner.
2. Manchester United 0 Pompey 1
March 8, 2008
The day the FA Cup dream became tangible. Sulley Muntari fires past stand-in keeper Rio Ferdinand to record the first Pompey win at Old Trafford since 1957. Pompey head to Wembley for the first time since 1939.
3. Southampton 1 Pompey 4
February 13, 2010
Demolition Derby Part II.
Pompey take their fierce rivals apart on the road to a Wembley return. Being stood pitchside with Avram Grant as he took the acclaim of fans after is a memory which will never die.
4. West Brom 2 Pompey 0
May 15, 2005
A mutual love-in at the Hawthorns with a happy ending for all.
The billboard outside the ground read ‘Play Up Baggies’ and fans swapped shirts as West Brom stayed up – a result which sent Southampton into the Championship.
5. Wigan 1 Pompey 2
April 29, 2006
Six wins and two draws culminated in the Great Escape being completed at the JJB Stadium. Pompey fall behind but Benjani scores his first goal for the club at the 15th attempt and Matt Taylor’s penalty creates bedlam.
6. Millwall 0 Pompey 5
March 1, 2003
The Paul Merson show. Merse served up one of the best performances ever delivered by a player wearing the star and crescent.
The shame was Pompey fans were banned from the game.
But Millwall followers handed the Blues captain a standing ovation, a rarity indeed.
7. Crystal Palace 4 Pompey 1
November 7, 1998
Terry Venables and Terry Fenwick had left the club as financial problems mounted and were the subject of anger from 4,500 travelling fans.
A third of them stay for 30 minutes after the final whistle – and had to be convinced to leave by Alan Ball.
8. Liverpool 4 Pompey 0
October 2, 1987
A very subjective choice this one.
One of my early away trips. The sight and smells of travelling to the champions are vivid as are the memories of outsinging the Kop.
9. Burnley 1 Pompey 2
February 27, 2010
Pompey respond to being plunged into administration with a defiant performance. There’s iconic scenes after the game as Avram Grant is mobbed as he pays tribute to fans.
10. Crewe 1 Pompey 2
March 2, 2013
It was the longest winter of discontent with the club fighting for survival, in administration and on a 23-game run without victory. That all changes at Gresty Road. The afternoon is synonymous with Johnny Ertl, who celebrates with fans after the game.
