Jack Whatmough makes his Pompey return for the reserves at Bournemouth today.

The 18-year-old has not played since injuring a hamstring at York on October 4.

Despite being back in training for the past fortnight, the central defender has yet to
feature in any of Andy Awford’s first-team squads.

However, he will start for the reserves in today’s league match at the Hamworthy Recreation Club in Wimborne (2pm).

Whatmough, who has made nine appearances this season, is among a strong Blues match-day 14 for the Final Third Development League clash with the Cherries.

Midfielder Nigel Atangana, who appeared from the bench for 20 minutes in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Shrewsbury, is also included.

Dan Butler and Andy Barcham, unused substitutes in that Greenhous Meadow result, will also have run outs as Andy Awford looks for the format to get match minutes into his players.

Midfielder Ben Close (dead leg) and Alex Wynter (tight groin) are both available again having been denied first-team duty last week, with Nick Awford and Bradley Tarbuck joining them in the line-up.

Meanwhile, Jack Maloney is eligible to feature despite joining Poole Town on a month’s loan on Friday.

The Isle of Wight winger came on as substitute in the Dolphins’ 5-4 victory over Paulton Rovers at the weekend but can still turn out for his parent club in reserve games.

There is no place for in-form Conor Chaplin, who took his Academy tally to 13 in 12 matches with a double in their 3-0 win over Newport County on Saturday.

Although fellow scholars James Granger, Fahad Rwakarambwe, Snorre Nilsen, Lewis Gill and Alex Bass are named in the squad.

The reserves have beaten Peterborough and drawn with Luton in their opening league matches.

Earlier this month they also won 3-1 at Cheltenham in the first group match of the Final Third Development League Cup.
