Pompey have this week been rebuffed in an approach for a loan recruit.

But Guy Whittingham insists he is in no rush to fill the two spaces currently available in his Blues set-up.

With the emergency loan window closing on March 21, the caretaker boss is weighing up the make-up of his squad.

The departure of James Keene at the weekend leaves him with a squad of 18 – and a striker short.

That prompted him to make a move at the start of the week for a unnamed player on loan.

Despite being made available by his club, they had a change of heart and pulled the plug to end Pompey’s interest.

The set-back has been brushed off by Whittingham, who now claims he is unlikely to add to his squad this week.

Instead he will continue to assess those development players out on loan and those within the Academy set-up.

Last night he checked on the progress of defender Alex Grant for the Hawks in their clash with Bath.

The likes of Dan Thompson and George Colson, in addition to Academy youngsters such as Bradley Tarbuck and Jack Whatmough, will also come into the equation.

But Whittingham is adamant he is under no time constraints to make a decision.

He said: ‘It’s not imperative we get someone in straight away.

‘We have four strikers now instead of five and we are looking at young lads to bring up.

‘There are definitely thoughts in our minds where we go from here, we are just gauging it and seeing how to add to our squad of 18.

‘We have tried this week to get in a player on loan but unfortunately could not do it.

‘It was one we were looking at for next season and we were told he would be available on loan now – but the club concerned changed their minds.

‘It’s unfortunate but not the end of the world, we’ll just keep looking.

‘The loan window is open for a while yet. I don’t think there will be anything done this week.

‘We’re also looking at the younger lads to see if there is anything we can do there.’

Midfielder Colson is currently on loan at Bashley along with right-back Elliot Wheeler.

Meanwhile, Thompson has been a regular performer for Bognor, while Grant replaced Dan Butler at left-back at the Hawks.
