Alex Wynter is eyeing a promotion challenge after linking up with Pompey.

The 20-year-old yesterday arrived from Crystal Palace on a season-long to bolster Andy Awford’s defensive options.

A versatile performer, he helped keep Colchester in League One at the tail-end of last year.

Now he’s at Fratton Park and part of Awford’s revamped squad for the campaign ahead.

And Wynter believes the club is equipped to be threatening at the top of the table rather than suffer a repeat of last season’s relegation concerns.

He said: ‘I was expecting to go back to Palace and then got the call Friday afternoon saying Portsmouth wanted me.

‘It’s a great club so why not?

‘The fans are so passionate plus it’s a club that is going to be pushing for promotion, so it’s a whole different challenge for myself.

‘It has always been a great club and I am just hoping we can push on this season.

‘I have been an unused substitute at Fratton Park before, but still took in all the atmosphere.

‘It gave me goosebumps when I first walked out, the crowd, the bell, it was crazy.

‘I really enjoyed playing games at Colchester last season and want more of that, that is why I have come to this club. I want to play matches.

‘And I will be in this morning for training to get going.’

Wynter has risen through the ranks at Selhurst Park and the club took up a 12-month option to retain him this summer.

He had impressed on loan at Colchester at the end of last season, making six appearances and scoring a goal.

The U’s were keen to take him back, but Pompey will be his home for the season.
