GLORIOUS GOODWOOD: Day one as it happened
Glorious Goodwood is with us once more - and day one was memorable.
Glorious Goodwood equals five days of the best flat racing imaginable in the most beautiful surroundings possible. 2m-plus of prize money. 100,000 punters coming through the gates of the famous old racetrack.
What is there not to get excited about? And where else is there other than this website not to go to get excited about it? We are Goodwood's local paper, you know, so you really don't want to trust anyone else to guide you through it. We've also done the Glorious magazine, which I'll tell you more about later.
Don't want to put you off but this is my first attempt at a blog on this scale, and, compared to many in this game, I'm not a racing expert - not even close. But I'm 'borrowing' the extensive knowledge of others, having a few stabs in the dark myself, and keeping my eye on everything that moves at Glorious Goodwood to bring you every tip, preview, report, result, picture and quote you need to keep you abreast of all that's occurring on the Downs.
We'll do most recent updates at the top of the story (if it's good enough for the BBC live text people it's good enough for me) and please - please - get involved. E-mail me at steve.bone@chiobserver.co.uk with your tips, favourite Glorious Goodwood memories, your after-racing account of your day if you have been to the festival, or anything else you might think relevant.
5.55. Exhausted though we are, we aren't going home yet. Got some stories to supply you for tomorrow's action (the highlight of which is the Sussex Stakes), got some thoughts on today to assemble and bring you, and got some numbers to crunch, though sadly not many 10 notes to count. If you've been at Goodwood today, send us your comments and pictures. The first gallery of the week will be on here tomorrow.
5.45. You just can't keep Hannon & Hughes out of the winner's enclosure at Goodwood. Martyr wins the day's final race with a bit to spare at 7/1,three lengths clear of Ryan Moore on Jedi. It's been a good day for both jockeys, as you could have predicted, and who'd bet against both having plenty more success over the next four days. It's been a fantastically unpredictable first day. Full results at the bottom.
5.16. We're still waiting for any jockey or trainer to complete a double. Jim Crowley on 10/1 shot Pabusar lands the EBF Dallaglio Foundation Maiden Stakes by half-a-length from Mr Hughes and Big Issue. That's two seconds and two thirds for me today. Will stick to each-way bets from now on.
4.54. Anyone see the Olympic seats at Goodwood today? Lawrence Dallaglio, and double Olympic Gold medalist Sarah Gosling showed off the London 2012 seats (pictured above) as a tour of major events around Great Britain and Northern Ireland got under way. The pair were both at Goodwood for Sporting Greats Day and took time out to encourage even more sports enthusiasts to start planning for the Games. Dallaglio said: "With just two years to go until London 2012 it's vital that people start planning for the Games by registering their interest for tickets."
4.39. Kieren Fallon, who I have a hunch could end up the top jockey at GG this week, gets his account up and running by winning the Tatler Summer Season Stakes on Start Right for Luca Cumani. That's PA in the lead in the tipping table. Cumani's assistant Ed Walker said: "That was a bit heart stopping and it was a really brave ride from Kieren."
4.30. Work to do now. Suddenly it's Atkins 1 PA 1 Fitzdares 1 Bone 0. Three races to go, though, on what is proving a throughly-absorbing opening day with plenty of twists and turns.
4.05. That's why I don't make my living from tipping. Zebedee takes the Molecomb by a neck for the deadly Hannon/Hughes partnership after going off 2/1 favourite. First win for anyone who's picks have been highlighted on this page. Full result down the bottom of the page. Hughes said: "That's what it's all about. The first day he ever won at Windsor I felt him pull up with me and he only won by half a length. I said to the boss afterwards that this horse needed holding up and the only day we didn't was at Royal Ascot - and that was the boss's fault! It was worth having a go but it didn't work, so we dropped him in today."
3.50. Molecomb Stakes time and everyone I've asked, and some I haven't, are picking Zebedee, just like Richard Hughes has. Because I'm a contrary type I'm going for Avonmore Star, each-way of course... Enjoying it so far? Or should I say, is there anyone out there following this...?
3.35. Sad news reaches us that Film Score was put down after falling and breaking a hind leg in the 2.45, when Frankie Dettori was on board.
3.30. Tom Queally wins the Betfair Cup on Lord Shanakill, the 13/2 second favourite. Favourite Dalghar is beaten into third.
3.10. The big one of the day is next up, the Betfair Cup. Finjaan is defending this one. Atkins is getting his excuses in early for lagging behind me in the tipping stakes, even if he's closer to my expertise than Fitzdares and PA put together. "If I finish last I'd like to offer the following mitigating circumstances... I have to pick mine 48 hours prior to the off! Can't be fair, although it wouldn't have altered my selections there."
2.49. Ryan Moore's first win of the week was never going to be far away and he gets it on board Jeremy Noseda's Rebel Soldier in the Betfair Gordon Stakes, by a head from second favourite Dandino (which I also tipped, not that I'm crowing just yet). Frankie Dettori was a faller in that one but he seems okay. The last two winners of this Group Three contest have gone on to great things with Conduit and Harbinger scoring, and Noseda will have grand plans for the Danehill Dancer colt. Jockey Moore said: "He travelled nicely the whole way round and quickened up well off a lead. He just got a little bit idle and lonely being out in front from the two, but it was a nice performance." Dandino really found his stride close home and was narrowing the gap with every stride. Full result below.
2.14. Indian Days takes the thrilling opening race of the festival, the Betfair App For Iphone Handicap, at 12/1. (See full results at bottom of story). The James Given-trained five-year-old was given a cracking ride by Dale Swift to get the better of title-chaser Paul Hanagan and Changing The Guard (16-1) by half a length. The pace had been set by Australia Day who faded, leaving Satwa Moon (my tip - did I recommend each-way?) to stay on for third.
1.45. Goodwood looks an absolute picture - everything from the racing surface to the parade ring is in pristine condition. There's a real buzz around the place and now we just want it to get started. Every trainer or jockey you speak to is talking up their chances ... but they can't all win.
1.10. Did I mention that we (the Chi Observer) have produced a 68-page magazine called Glorious which will be given out free to race-goers during the week. It's not half bad, even if we do say so ourselves. It includes interview with Rod Fabricius and his replacement Adam Waterworth, a piece from Seamus Buckley, profiles of Richard Hannon and some of the top flat jockeys, articles on food, fashion and the Vintage at the Races night (with a chance to win tickets to that, too) coming up next month. If you can't get hold of one at Goodwood, you can get one at the Observer office in Eastgate Square. Will post some of the articles on here as the week goes by just to tantilise...
12.50. The excitement mounts. Crowds pouring in, even if today won't be the largest of the week. Don't want to confuse anyone but a couple of lines coming in about matters later in the week such as ">Richard Hannon's hopes for the Vintage Stakes and the return of an old Goodwood favourite. Sorry, promise I'll concentrate on today. Just off to part with some cash...
12.30. Update on the going ... the good to firm section is on the round course, between the 2m start and the 7f start. The rest of the course is good. Rain holding off at the mo. Bookies reporting a lot of backing for various Mark Johnston runners. He did exceedingly well at last year's festival.
11.55. Always worth noting which riders and trainers are in good Goodwood form. Here's the list of those who have notched more than win there this year ahead of Glorious. Jockeys: R Moore 5, P Dobbs 4, G Baker 4, F Dettori 4, R Hughes 4, K Fallon 3, L Keniry 3, P Robinson 2, F Sweeney 2, M Dwyer 2, P Cosgrave 2, T Queally 2, D O'Neill 2, E Ahern 2, G Fairley 2, S Drowne 2, S Hitchcott 2. Trainers: R Hannon 9, M Stoute 4, R Charlton 3, J Dunlop 2, B Meehan 2, P Hedger 2, G Moore 2, M Al Zarooni 2, A Perrett 2, S Williams 2, M Channon 2.
11.40. A few non-runners... in the 2.10, South Cape has been withdrawn by connections. Simon De Montfort has been pulled out of the Gordon Stakes (2.45pm) and Kazbow is lame and won't run in the 5.40. Oh and it's started raining in this part of the world. Perhaps it'll pass before racing begins.
11.25. No putting it off any longer. Here are my selections for today. I'd like to tell I've spent hours studying the form but I haven't. Far too busy last night watching t20 cricket on Sky - and anyway, studying form never got me anywhere. Here goes - with the disclaimer that you may be better off sticking a pin in the racecard than following these: 2.10 Satwa Moon, 2.45 Dandino, 3.25 Balthazaar's Gift, 4pm Avonmore Star, 4.35 Truism, 5.10 Big Issue, 5.40 Woolfall Treasure. Just for fun, and not money, I'll be seeing who out of me, Rob Atkins, Fitzdares or the Press Association tots up most winners over the five days.
10.45. It's brightening up in Chichester. Who mentioned rain? More backing for Zebedee in the Molecomb reaches me from my friend Lesley Stephen, who is a regular at Goodwood and Fontwell and gets more than her fair share of returns from the bookies.
10.35. The very latest from Seamus Buckley, clerk of the course, who tells me as he walks the course: "I'm delighted with the condition of the course. We couldn't be starting with better. On the majority of the ground the going is good."
10.20. Goodwood MD Rod Fabricius is a keen supporter of our coverage here and has enlisted local bookmakers Fitzdares to get involved. Here are their selections for today.
9.55. Rachel Suter at the racecourse tells me you can turn up and pay on the day today if you fancy it. You can get into the Gordon Enclosure for 33 or the Lennox for 15. And if you are going you might like to peruse the Racing Post's full list of runners, riders and betting for the day.
9.32am. Time for a few more selections. Rob Atkins, racing man for The News in Portsmouth, knows a thing or two about this game and has gone for the following on today's card: 2.10 Almiqdaad, 2.45 Arctic Cosmos, 3.25 Dalghar, 4.00 Zebedee, 4.35 Truism, 5.05 Big Issue, 5.40 Emerging Artist. Don't worry, my tips follow soon (oh, you weren't worried...)
9.10am. Today is Sporting Greats Day at Glorious. Rugby legend Lawrence Dallaglio is hosting a big lunch and there are loads of service personnel benefitting from free tickets to the racing thanks to the Tickets for Troops charity. At the Observer we ran a poll asking for you to vote for your south coast sporting great - and the winner, as featured here, is a man familiar to many at Goodwood.
8.40am. A big part of this blog will involve me passing on tips for each day's racing from various sources. We'll have the Press Association tips, a few from Rob Atkins at our sister paper The News (whose coverage is well worth a look every day this week, by the way) and we'll also have some from local bookies Fitzdares. I will also be passing on my own selections, for what they're worth, and inviting anyone out there reading this to try to do better. Here, for starters, are today's Press Association tips.
8.20am. You'd think the London Olympics started today the way everyone is rattling on about it on TV and radio. In fact it's two years today. And Glorious Goodwood-goers can see a piece of history when a sample of the seats that will be used during the Games are put on show at the track.
8am. A quick weather check to begin with. Not the best today, is it? They're saying this afternoon at Goodwood will be mainly cloudly with a reasonable chance of rain. Rest of the week looks better, though.
