Golf tournament holds merit for Berit
A total of 26 men and 13 ladies took part in the Frank Ellis Trophy at Bognor Golf Club. Read that and all the news from our other local golf clubs here...
Berit Smallcorn won the trophy with 44 points. The Over-80 prize, off the red tees, went to Keith Setchell with 41 points.
Best off the yellow tees with 41 points was John Bumfry and Peter Collins best off the white tees with 39. The winning team was Berit Smallcorn, Ken Morgan and Keith Setchell.
Dave Hicks has been a member at Bognor since 1985 and for the past three years has been playing for the Sussex seniors.
This year Sussex have won all four of their league matches against Dorset, Hants, Kent and Surrey and now go forward to play the winners of the northern division for the South-East Telegraph Salver.
Playing in all four games, Dave has completed an unbeaten sequence, winning three matches and halving one.
There were 56 entrants for the Phillips Salver.
The winners were Mick Martin and Peter Lea with a nett score of 67.
Runners-up were Andy Brown and Richard Longhurst, playing off a 4 handicp, on 68. Third on countback were Chris Johnson and his son Craig, with Jim Urquhart and Andy Cooke fourth also on 68.
Fifty-nine members of the veterans' section took part in the Jack Lemmer Trophy.
Barry Appleby was the winner on 43 points on countback from Peter Collins.
Division one was won by Dave Orton on 41, Peter Lott second after countback and Doug Develin third on 40. Alan Burrage won division two with 39 points, Brian Lewis was second on 38 and Tony Sutherland third on 37.
Thirty-eight entered the men's monthly midweek stableford. Les Dobson scored 43 points, followed by Andrew Drysdale on 42 after countback from Paul Archer and James Maclean fourth, playing off seven, with 41 points.
The winner of Bognor's juniors' Redfern Trophy was Louis Harrison with 40 points. Jordan Vincent was second with 37 and Jake Bennett third on 32.
Prizes came from Redfern Engineering and presented by Richard Beresford.
Ten took part in the Captain's Junior Trophy, which was won by Tom Stoneham with 40 points. Second was Jason Cullen on 38 on countback from Oliver Longlands, on countback from Jordan Vincent.
The National Skills Challenge, developed by the EWGA and EGU, covers a series of activities for young golfers – putting, chipping, pitching, bunker play and full swing – with prizes for boys and girls who reach the regional and national finals.
Bognor juniors continue to take part, with Tom Stoneham scoring 42 points and Cullen, Vincent and Harrison 40 each.
In the under-eight category, where youngsters are set different tasks, Jake Stoneham, having achieved 17 points, has already qualified for the south-east region finals later in the year.
COWDRAY PARK
Cowdray Park seniors travelled to Ifield buoyed by their performance at Pyecombe the previous day. Regrettably their hopes were rudely shattered by the home side, who ran out 6-1 winners.
The sole winning Cowdray pairing were John Newman and Roger Poat, while a creditable half was achieved by Graham Evans and partner Trevor Cousins.

Playing under a new match manager, Chris Hoare, Cowdray Park seniors were suitably inspired when they entertained and beat West Chiltington 5-3.
Hoare and seniors' captain Wally Mitchell won the opening match 3&1, quickly followed by a 5&4 win from John Smith and Dave Wickham.
The condition of the course during the drought conditions, continues to draw favourable comments from visiting teams and members' guests.

Cowdray Park seniors travelled to Griggs Green to face Old Thorns vets on a very hilly and gruelling course. They returned with a creditworthy 3-3 draw against a team whose home record stands up to the closest scrutiny.
Star performance for the visitors came from Dave Lucking and last year's seniors' captain Dave Tilley, who routed their opponents 6&5.
Recent Cowdray open winner Ken Marjoram and partner Peter Clarke led from the outset and came home 5&4 winners.

Following the July stableford, the leaderboard of the Cowdray Park seniors' Eclectic table showed no change in the top five as these players have little margin for significant improvement now.
Moving up stealthily behind are David Heard and David Tilley, while a continual contender in this competition, John Kitchener, moved into contention.
Biggest mover in the top half was Stableford winner, Ian Goodall, who in two months has leaped from 98th to 17th.
The Carter Trophy leaders remain unaltered but Phil Harrison's second spot moved him clear of Graham Evans, while Cliff Davis, who
has finished second, first and second in the last three competitions, moved to within 0.5 of a point behind Evans.
CHICHESTER
Chichester Golf Club, in association with the Observer, held a record-breaking weekend on the nine-hole par three short course.
Oli Bradbury won the 12-16 age category and set the course record with an impressive score of 25. Oli is a junior member at the club and has a handicap of six.
Other prizewinners were Joseph Fradgley (under-12s) with a score of 29, Ken Benjemin for the adults with 27 and Ken Perrin (over-75s) with a score of 31.
Sam Campbell, 15, won the nearest-the-pin prize on the seventh hole with an impressive hole in one – which was rather hard to beat. He was over the moon.
You can try to beat Oli Bradbury's record score on August 14 and 15 when the club hold another par-three record-breaking weekend. The competition is open to all and there is no need to book. There will also be a Wilson putter and wedge demonstration area.
n Chichester ladies played the Granny Goblet and a Tuesday stableford.
Results: Granny Goblet: 1 Jennifer Fidler 44pts, 2 Terry Payne 42, 3 Jane John 41. Tuesday Stableford: 1 Elaine Fell 42, 2 Valerie Hall 41, 3 Maggie Martin-Prudhomme 37.
SELSEY
It was out with the woods for Selsey ladies' captain Linda Partridge as she took the Ladies' Irons Only Trophy with 31 points. Sylvia Carter was runner-up.
And putting the woods back in the bag for the next competition, Linda went on to win the Centenary stableford with 37 points.
In second place was Hilary Kennedy-Cooke.
'Less is more' was the motto for Judy Sharpe carrying a driver, seven-wood, nine-iron, putter and steady golf all the way to her fourth cup win this season.
The trophy was the Three Clubs and a Putter competition and Judy just beat Penny Hesp on countback with 36 points.
