Chichester ladies read it just right in Mail on Sunday contest
Chichester ladies’ Mail on Sunday competition team set off to meet West Sussex GC in the first round.
It was a cold, grey day and Chichester knew they’d have a demanding afternoon. Remarkably all the matches all went Chichester’s way for a 5-0 win.
Lisa Mitchelmore, despite being three down after five holes, pulled her game back to all square by the 18th when she managed to hole the winning putt. Rachel Greenland’s match was nip and tuck and she won 2&1.
Caroline Hawkes dispatched her opponent by the 12th hole, winning 7&6, and Helen Ball was hot on her heels with a 5&4 triumph. Last year’s lady captain Kathy Donohoe played the anchor position and duly came home two up.
BOGNOR
Ninety one people attended the Burns Night supper at Bognor.
New captain Alistair Murray did the ‘address to the haggis and his friend Angus Campbell, who had travelled from Heswell GC on Merseyside, gave the toast to the ‘immortal memory of Robert Burns’.
The captain and ladies’ captain Denise Duquemin presented a bouquet of flowers to Maria Vegas in recognition of her wonderful contribution to the success of the club’s catering service, this being the last catering event for Maria and husband Joe.
The following day, 84 members and guests took part in the Haggis Hunt, a Texas scramble.
The winning team were Gordon Catt, Andy Field and Graham Halliday with a nett score of 57.4. They narrowly beat Nicky Jackson, Liam Maskell and Jordan Vincent on 57.7.
Third were Jeff Clark, Neil Slater and Hazel Patrick on 58.7; fourth Alan Endicott, Jane Russell and Suzanne Taylor with 59.5.
The captain presented haggis to each member of the winning team. Thirteen ladies took part and the best all-ladies team were Nicky Holton, Sophie James and Wendy Johnson.
Seventeen took part in the first midweek Stableford of the season off the white tees. The winner was Gerry O’Neil with 42 points. Mike Oates was second on 41, John Owen third on 40 and Gez White fourth on 39. Owen had twos on the second and the tenth, White on the fifth and tenth.
On a very cold and frosty day, 43 ladies entered a Stableford.

COWDRAY PARK
Cowdray Park travelled to the excellent Guildford course to take on the locals in their latest Surrey & West Sussex Winter League match.
Following a hard-fought 2-2 draw they are level with Puttenham, who have two games in hand.
The first match brought a 2&1 defeat for Terry Jasper & Harvey Terry.
Two eagles scored – by Harvey Terry on the par-five eighth hole and the home side’s Barry Smart on the par-four fourth.
Further gloom followed with a defeat for Derek Smith and Brian Carpenter, who lost by one hole.
Fortunes were reversed in the final two matches, with wins for Jan de Vries & John Doran (4&2) and in-form Dave Tilley & Dave Lucking (three up) to force a draw.
Results (Cowdray names first): Terry Jasper & Harvey Terry lost to Barry Smart & Geoff Sheldon 2&1; Derek Smith & Brian Carpenter lost to Andy Bell & Keith Hack 1 dn; John Doran & Jan de Vries beat Jim Butcher & David Small 4&2; Dave Tilley & Dave Lucking beat David Snelgrove & Mike Wills 3 up.
After two rounds of competition, the early positions in Cowdray Park seniors’ Eclectic show the top seven places filled by players on handicaps of 15 or less.
Leading the way after two fine opening rounds is the Seniors’ lowest handicapper Dave Lucking, who plays off six, with a nett 69, closely followed on 69.5 by Dave Gaff (13) and Gordon Kendall (15).
The ever-dangerous Dave Hirons is lurking in fourth position on 71.5.
AVISFORD PARK
The presentation day competition was won by Paul Napier-Raikes with a nett score of 68 and runner-up was Lee Rogers with 69.
This was followed with a function at the Hilton Hotel with music provided by Xtreme Sounds.
A raffle was held, with proceeds going to the captain’s charity, the Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice.
The midweek medal was won by Bob West with a nett 68.
The club medal was won in division one by Stephen Porter with 67 and in division two by Brian Ford with the same score.
The senior medal was won in division one by Gerry Tarrant with 66 and in division two was Kenneth Hales with 67.
