New Bognor captain’s Scot a great golfing year ahead
Bognor’s new captain Alistair Murray and his wife Lesley were hosts to 120 members at the captain’s welcoming party. The evening was a great mixture of good banter, food and music.
Denise Duquemin, the ladies’ captain, on behalf of the ladies’ section, presented a bouquet to Lesley.
The next day, 148 members and their guests joined the captain for breakfast in the clubhouse ahead of his drive-in – in procession which comprised Alistair in full Highland regalia being led to the 1st tee by a tartan-clad escort.
After the drive-in all the golfers competed in a four-ball better-ball shotgun competition. The standard was very high, with the winners Jason Wickham and Peter Duke achieving 43 points.
Graeme and Neil Whitehead were second on 40, Peter Stoneham and Vic Vincent third on 39. The prize for the best ladies’ score went to Teresa Byrne and Sophie James on 38. Nearest the pin on the second was John Lampard, and on the tenth, Andy Bence.
Proceeds will go to STEPS, the captain’s nominated charity for 2012. STEPS is the UK’s only national charity which supports all lower-limb conditions, mainly in children.
A Stableford competition for teams of three took place for Bognor ladies, with two scores to count on each hole.

COWDRAY PARK
The weather again proved a determining factor in the Cowdray Park seniors’ Stableford.
This time it was the early starters who encountered the worst of the weather, with heavy showers making life very difficult, only to be replaced by bright and dry spells later in the morning.
One man who made light of conditions was Ian Goodall, top scorer with 38 points to win the newly-formed seniors’ division two. This was Goodall’s third competitive success during the three years he has been a member of the section, and he has also submitted many consistent scorecards.
Second in this division was Mick Morling with a creditable 36 points.
Division one was won by Chris Hoare (37pts), while second on 36 on countback was single-figure handicapper, Dave Lucking, who teed off last in company with recent winner Phil Pett, who found his handicap reduction a burden.
The first two in each division will progress to the end-of-season seniors’ championship.
Members were pleased to welcome back Mike Burgess after serious head surgery and he proved his prowess had not been diminished by his lay-off by scoring 30 points.
The monthly raffle raised £141, in addition to the £10 from the Captain’s Challenge, for the Mary How Trust. Meanwhile, the Cowdray Park team travelled to second-in-the-table Farnham for their latest Surrey & West Sussex League match, hoping to build on their excellent away win at Bramley.
They arrived to find 18 temporary greens, which made control difficult, in particular knowing where to pitch the ball.
The only Cowdray pair to conquer the conditions were team captain Terry Jasper and partner Mike Purdie, who won the lead match 3&2.
The remaining three matches all went to the home side to shoot them to the top of the table by three points over Puttenham, who have two games in hand, while Cowdray remain in fourth place.
Results (Cowdray names second): John Cooper & Evan Ames lost to Terry Jasper & Mike Purdie 3&2; Ian Anscombe & Bernard Godward beat Dave Balfour & Rob Doney 4&2; Mike Ward & Gregg Faulkner beat Roger Poat & Ken Newberry 4&2; Mike Tiddy & Dave Lowrey beat Peter Hallt & Dave Tilley 2 up.
Cowdray ladies played The Waltz. Playing in threes, the format is one score on first hole, two on the second and all three on the third, and so on.
The winners with a magnificent score of 72 points were Angie Edwards, Anne Laver and Caroline Smith. Second with 67 were Margaret Hoare, Mary Morling and Heather Pearce; third with 65 were Sue Brown, Wendy Street and Pat Wallace. A Stableford was played in teams of three, two scores to count each hole and then selecting the best nine holes.
Results: Maureen Bailey, Mary Sexton & Angie Edwards 46pts, Marilyn Davis, Mary Morling & Janet Poat 45; Lil Cummins, Anne Laver & Linda Doney 45.
AVISFORD PARK
In the midweek medal, Al Winterton won with a nett 66. The club Stableford was won in division one by Andy Cooke with 44 points and in division two by John How with 41.
The senior Stableford competition was won in division one by Michael Paige with 38 points and in division two Brian Comber with 40.
