Fitzdares selections for day two

Here are local bookies Fitzdares' selections for Wednesday.

2.10 Probably the toughest race on the card, a marathon handicap with 20 runners. Junior landed a gamble on his first run for David Pipe at Ascot last time and is favourite for this, but Tony Martin has a similar sort: Dream Champion @ 10/1 who has not run on the flat for almost 4 years but is running off a winning mark and can land this for his shrewd connections.

2.45: A very interesting Group 2 for juveniles. King Torus, for the almost unbeatable Hannon/Hughes combo, won well last time at Newmarket but may have had the run of the race and carries a 3lb penalty here. The one I like is Crown Prosecutor who was backed off the boards on debut at Goodwood and won despite showing greenness and getting checked mid-race. He then went on to win a competitive race at Salisbury and with Fallon back on board looks the one to be with at the likely 2/1.

3.25: The Sussex stakes is the highlight of the day even though it might turn into a match. Canford Cliffs hacked up in the Irish Guineas and St James Palace and is clearly the best 3yo miler at present, with Richard Hannon suggested yesterday that he may have improved again since Ascot. Last year's winner Rip Van Winkle was below par last time but will undoubtedly come on for the run as he was weak in the market that day. Rip Van Winkle needed a couple of runs last year to reach his peak and may not be totally 100% today, but with two pacemakers ensuring that it is a real test Canford Cliffs will need to dig deep to get past a horse that stays 10f well. I think it will be close but Canford Cliffs should just have the edge.

4.00 This highly competitive handicap features several betting propositions and luck-in-running will play a part. Verdant will be popular after his impressive win at Sandown, while Berling is interesting back in a big field after finishing behind Bowdler's Magic in a messy race at Haydock. However, Sea Of Heartbreak keeps improving for a stable in form and, granted a trouble-free late run, can defy another rise in the weights and remain unbeaten this season.

4.35: A Class 2 maiden with only 3 horses having racecourse experience. Although unraced, Yashila, an expensive purchase for Richard Hannon, will probably go off favourite and be hard to beat. However, Rayolorien ran a great race last time despite running very green and trying to come from behind at Nottingham which tends to favour front runners. With William Knights juveniles coming on a lot for their first run she is the selection.

5.10 Of the market principals here, Seasonal Cross has plenty to do under her penalty and up in grade, while Agony And Ecstasy is unproven on ground this fast. She's In The Money has had excuses the last twice and could run well at a price, but the solid one is Dance East, who is relatively unexposed and has fewer question marks over her than most.

5.45: A competitive finale and a tentative selection in Coasting who should enjoy the return to Goodwood.
