Ladies' cricket team make their Bognor bow

Bognor Regis Ladies v Selsey Ladies

The Regis Oval saw history made as Bognor ladies took to the field for the first time.

Selsey provided the opposition for their inaugural match.

Selsey won the toss and put Bognor into bat. Hannah Stemp and skipper Lisa Jaycocks opened, with Jaycocks facing the first ball.

The pair soon had the runs flowing, with Stemp in particular hitting to all parts and retiring on 25.

Jaycocks was run out after one risky single too many and some good work behind the stumps from Selsey keeper P Baker.

Debbie Millar was bowled by the accurate Wilson for three. Terri Booker and Claire Delaney brought stability to the innings which saw the pair take the score to 91 before Booker snr was caught by Wilson off Walton.

Delaney was bowled by the accurate Cawley. Stevie Jackman and Megan Booker took Bognor to a competitive total of 109-4.

Selsey looked to make quick inroads through Wilson and Cawley.

A sharp catch by M Booker off Delaney split up a dangerous opening partnership and Delaney had the honour of registering Bognor ladies’ first wicket.

Wilson continued to amass runs and retired on 25.

Baker took the fight to Bognor as the wicketkeeper amassed a slick 25. But Bognor’s bowlers were in their stride, with Delaney taking another wicket to finish with 2-10.

Then it became the Booker show with mother and daughter getting among the wickets.

Millar weighed in with a wicket and not even the returning Wilson could prevent Bognor recording a maiden victory.

Chichester Priory Park U10 Spitfires v Madehurst

Priory’s Spitfires returned to Goodwood for their fixture with Madehurst.

The visitors won the toss and elected to field first on a green wicket.

The opening bowlers started well but Chichester soon got going and set the foundations for the innings.

Spitfire’s batters all contributed well with some good shot sections and big hitting combined with some splendid running between wickets.

Rustell and Brackley piled on the runs taking the score to 327 after the innings started at 200.

In the reply, opening bowlers Brackley and Baily mixed their bowling effectively giving little away.

Madehurst struggled to keep up with the rate, despite some brave batting.

Pick of the bowlers were Chapple, with three wickets and Calum Baily, taking his first competitive wickets for the club and ending up with four.

Goodwood v Duke of Richmond’s XI

Goodwood played the Duke of Richmond’s XI, with the opposition team organised by his grandsons Charlie Settrington and captain William Gordon Lennox.

Many of the team have represented Eton and they were easily the best side Goodwood had probably played all summer. The Duke’s side batted first with key contributions coming from Collins with 57, Campbell-Harries 24 and Nicholson 29 and they were all out for 181 in the 37th over.

The Goodwood bowling was pretty good but some of the fielding was pretty awful.

Matt Geffen bowled a great spell and deserved more than one wicket. James Mayne bowled eight overs and got three wickets, including two stumpings for Tim Odell. 

Ezaz took two for 28 and Matt Beard two for 36.  Steve Dudman cleaned up the tail with two for 14.

The Duke’s team’s bowling was consistently good, and all bar one of the Duke’s side took wickets including Roy with 2-27, Fenwick 1-24, Carlton-Smith 1-29, Charlie Settrington 1-36.

Peter Lamb fell first ball and Ezaz made 24, but a 77-run partnership by Mike Smith (39) and Sam Harvey (39) swung the game in Goodwood’s favour.

The old heads of Odell and John Clifton saw them home with three overs remaining.

The Duke and Duchess of Richmond and Lord and Lady March were in attendance. At tea Lady March present Odell with a special labelled bottle of champagne and a picture of the cricket ground to commemorate his 400th appearance and his 10,000 run for Goodwood.

This was the 13th game in the series against Goodwood started by the present Duke in 1950. The current score stands at 7-6 to Goodwood.

Ashling v St James Casuals

Ashling batted first and were in disarray as the first three wickets fell for only six runs.

Tim Gordon (14) steadied the ship before teenagers Morgan Frost (71*) and Warren Turner (32) were largely responsible for the home team being able to post a respectable 160 for nine.

Veteran Derek Candy bowled 16 consecutive overs for the visitors, returning 4 for 46.

Only Goodlad (18) and Hawley (22) made any serious dent in the target as Charlie Colley (3-29) and Nic Loubser (2-3) ripped through the Casuals’ line up.

In the end the visitors could only muster 81, giving Ashling a third consecutive victory.

Salthill

Salthill CC are holding their popular annual open day on Sunday, August 14.

It will include cricket, kwik cricket for kids, a barbecue, a tea and cake stall, a big raffle and a plant sale.

Admission is free at the event, which will be held at the Fishbourne Centre, off Blackboy Lane, from midday.

Salthill are having a good season in the Hampshire League and hope for an excellent turnout.
