A superb goalkeeping performance by Dan Roberts kept Selsey at bay and gave Chichester a 3-1 victory at muddy Oaklands Park in division one of the Sussex League.

City led 2-1 at the interval, but came in for a heavy onslaught after they were reduced to ten men - and it was only the heroics of Roberts that prevented a Selsey comeback.

There was a flurry of goals midway through the first half.

On 23 minutes, City’s Fraser Smith sent in a terrific curling effort that keeper Sam Joyce brilliantly finger-tipped over the bar. But from the resulting corner, Julian Boniface crept in to score the opener.

Three minutes later it was 2-0 after a howling error by Joyce, who came out of his goal to close down the advancing Dan Watts. The City forward reached the ball first and rounded Joyce before comfortably despatching the ball into an empty net.

Selsey retaliated on 30 minutes when a fierce shot was well stopped by Roberts, but Rob Wimble slammed in the rebound.

Now Selsey were dominating, and on 51 minutes Luke Killner’s effort took an evil deflection off a City defender before Roberts’ reflex reaction rescued City.

Jack Bingham broke through, only to be brought down by last-man Boniface on the edge of the box, which resulted in the inevitable red card.

But against the run of play, Chichester extended their advantage on 72 minutes when sub Dan Potter collected a cross from the left and rifled the ball home.

Selsey continued to pound their opponents’ goal, but time and time again Roberts would not be denied. With 11 minutes remaining, he somehow scrambled the ball off the line to stop what seemed a certain goal.

The result means Chichester remain third-bottom in the league table but are now only five points behind Selsey and Dorking immediately above them.

This Saturday Chichester host Redhill and Selsey entertain AFC Uckfield.
