Middleton’s good run of results continued when they won the Sussex League division-two top-of-the-table clash at St James’ Montefiore.

After the home side won the toss, Middleton – led by Sean Heather – were asked to field first on a wicket that offered plenty of pace and bounce.

Opening bowlers JamieThompson and Anthony Ender looked threatening early, but it was new boy Keelan Shoulders who got the breakthrough, bowling John Taylor for 21 with St James’s total at 38.

Davies (0), Richards (1) and captain Murray (17) all followed shortly after, leaving the home side on 47 for four. Bowler Ender was using the bouncy wicket to his advantage with St James struggling to play the short ball and he finished with figures of five for 30 of his 15 overs.

Runs were hard to come by, with the Middleton fielders setting high standards and, with wickets tumbling at the other end, St

James were in trouble. The other five wickets were shared between bowlers Shoulders, Adam Rawstrone, Brandon Hanley and Rob Willway as St James finished all out for 110 in the 42nd over.

In reply, Middleton had two early scares; Will Burrows went without troubling the scoring having been adjudged lbw and Jack Lerwill edged behind for three, both off the bowling of Johan Van Niekerk (2-33).

However this was all St James had to celebrate as opening batter Heather (55*) and number four Ben Hansford (51*) put on an exhibition of batting, rotating the strike well and hitting the bad ball to the boundary.

With just three to get, both players passed 50 to ensure another comprehensive victory for the team from Sea Lane.

After the match skipper Heather said: “Another 30 points is great for the team. It’s also nice for me to get runs, I’ve struggled for form in recent weeks but I felt good and will be looking to push on for more runs in the future”.
